Cannot change channels with remote, but will turn on/off/volume. Older Ph

Older phillips receiver, and old remote that came with it years ago.  No white remote. WHen did they come out? The only way I can change the channels is to go to the receiver, and push menu, then adjust with the arrows.  This has just happened and i cannot seem to make the remote activate the channels.  Ready to throw in the  towel.
