Can't connect surround sound audio to new remote

The old remotes finally gave out (buttons refused to work), so I ordered new ones. Had no trouble pairing the new remotes to the TV, but when I followed the process to connect the audio (settings > remote control > program > choose device), there's no device to select. The only option that appears is the TV, which is already connected. Any ideas?

Hi @slpence, let's get you some help pairing those devices.

You can program manually your DIRECTV remote to control an external audio device by following these steps:

1. Point the remote at your Genie HD DVR, Genie Mini, or Wireless Genie Mini.
2. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT buttons while continuing to point the remote at a Genie device. Stop when the green light at the top of the remote blinks twice.
3. Use the buttons on your Genie remote to enter code 961.
4. Press the channel up button once.
5. Press Enter.
6. Select OK when the TV screen displays Your Remote is now setup for RF.
7. Power on the device you want your remote to control.
8. Press MENU on your remote.
9. Select Settings > Remote Control > Program Remote.
10. Select the device you wish to control with the remote.
11. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete programming. The directions vary for different devices.

Edgar, thanks so  much for your response. Regrettably, it didn't work. Got the two green blinks, entered 961, and then ... nothing. Pressing the channel up button did nothing. I do remember trying this technique previously (when using the standard menu and choosing settings > remote control > program), and I actually did get to the "your remote is not set up for RF" message, but as I said, my audio device doesn't appear in the list of options for me to program. The only device that appears is my TV, and the remote's working fine with it. Just can't get it to operate the surround sound. What's next? Service call?

Good morning, Edgar and Jakob, and thank you for your responses. I did, as Jakob suggested, contact DirecTV via DM on Twitter and spent nearly an entire evening (from 5:06 p.m. till 12:12 a.m.) with first the virtual assistant, then MariaR, then KatherineL. The final message from KatherineL after midnight was "I'm sorry for the delay, as per double checking the information we found that the Yamaha receiver is not compatible with the remote." That simply can't be true since the old remotes controlled the Yamaha for literally years. I might believe that if the Yamaha appeared in the list of devices and couldn't be paired, BUT that isn't the problem. The problem is that the pairing process refuses to show me ANY audio devices at all.

Was this ever resolved?   Having the EXACT same issue! Old remote works ONLY for volume -- new (replacement) remote does everything else, but I don't even get the OPTION to control soundbar (JBL)

Receiver model? Remote model? What do you mean by the new remote does ‘everything’ else? Were you able to get the new remote working properly with the TV?

While this thread is from 11 months ago I’ll only keep it OPEN to answer your question.
