Changing SD receiver to HD and adding whole home DVR with existing HD DVR receiver
Hello,
Thanks in advance for any advice or assistance! I am new to directv as of 3 months now and already want to upgrade the standard def. receiver in bedroom, that in hindsite I wish I would have gotten HD at time of install for no extra charge but 1980's vintage TV didnt need it and has since been replaced with a HD TV and here I am.
What I would like to do is install a HD receiver on the bedroom TV, and hook up with my HD DVR receiver in the living room to be able to watch recorded shows in bedroom. I contacted cust. service today regarding this and basically was told since I am a newer customer I am being charged an additional $50 for install, which did not set well with me so I decided not to order at this time and look at installing myself. I understand I have to buy a $99 HD receiver, not a problem, but another $99 to install plus $49 for whole house DVR install plus $50 for being a newer customer is a heck of a lot more than the price I was willing to spend. I was told It has to be professionally installed as the installer "has all the tools and equipment on his truck". I already have in place a SWM ODU only, a Directv connected home adapter (DECA1MRO-01), 2 wire wireless router, and a directv band stop filter before SD receiver. I will probably have to connect living room to bedroom via ethernet cable about 25' worth, not a problem. I have the slimline dish I believe it is (oblong in shape and slightly larger that normal).
My main question is do I have most of the required components needed to do what I want other than the new HD receiver and some cable? Also is this something I can do myself? It just does not seem that difficult since everything is in place and it is just a matter of swapping a receiver for a HD receiver and getting set up with whole home DVR. I am sure it is slightly more difficult than this but hopefully not to much harder.
I have the HR24-200 receiver in the living room.
What additional equipment is needed for the setup I am after and what HD receiver should I get. Also I have seen that if you order a receiver from directv you may not get the one you need, how do I get around this?
Thank You again!!

So I do not need to link living room abd nedroom together with ethernet cable? Thanks Again
Nope, simply changing out the receiver will complete all wiring necessary for Whole Home. However, re read my last post. If you want to add Internet access, Cinemaplus etc, you'd need to install a Cinema Connection Kit which requires some components plus a coax cable from your splitter to your router. Note that linking them via Ethernet is a second way to connect them, but without the Ethernet is a simpler way.
I'm pretty sure Directv would activate your system, but the official policy is that they install Whole Home and yours would be a DIY unsupported system. I run an unsupported system and they activated mine and many others.

With your setup, you cannot connect a Ethernet cable to any of the DVR's or it will disable the Whole Home System. A quick primer. You have the Directv recommended system that uses the coax to stream programming. With that system, only the Cinema Connection Kit will work, and it will connect all of the networked boxes to the Internet and to your home network.
If you connect all of the DVR's and receivers to the router via Ethernet cable, that will work as well but is an unsupported system. You are using option #1. I'm attaching a schematic of the Cinema Connection Kit. In your case, add a green labeled 2 way splitter to the coax near the DVR where you have the Ethernet cable connected. Then attach the BB module and power supply, and lastly connect the BB module to your router with the Ethernet cable. All of the parts (2) can be ordered from http://www.solidsignal.com/
Make sure your router is set for DHCP auto configuration then do a power down reset as follows.
Assuming all of your components are connected properly, if you connect the router after the receivers/DVR's are activated, it's necessary to reconfigure the system with a power off reset. Assure that your router is set for DHCP auto configuration before proceeding.
Disconnect AC power from all DVR's and receivers, disconnect the power supply to the DECA/BB module connected to the router and disconnect AC power to the SWM power inserter. Disconnect power from your Modem and router. Then reconnect in the following order. The Modem, the router, SWM power inserter, the DECA/BB router power supply, the HD DVR's, allowing each to boot up before proceeding, the HD receivers, and finally the SD receivers, if any.
