Connecting my HR54 to the internet (wired or wireless) crashes my entire home network.

I recently built a new home and had Directv installed.  We have a full home automation system.  For months, every time we try to connect the Directv boxes to the internet, wired or wireless, it crashes EVERYTHING on the network.  I have to do a full reset on everything and disconnect internet to fix it.  I've had two techs come out in the last two weeks and tried everything from adding a DECA bridge to new boxes completely.  Nothing is fixing it.  They both gave up and left.  Any suggestions for anything on my router I need to change or set?  We have gigablast internet, so it definitely is enough to support it. TIA!

Weird how the HR54 causes this. If you have other DIRECTV HD DVR boxes like the HR24, does it do a similar behavior?

And how is the HR54 connected via Ethernet? Are there any other DECA BBs or Cinema Connection Kits in the way or is it a direct connection? If there is anything interfering with the direct Ethernet cable, disconnect it and try again.

If you have verified that, then it could most certainly be something with the WiFi router. It is extremely unusual for a normal networked device like the HR54 to completely crash the entire network. That makes me question if the network is crashed when a few devices are connected. In that case, you would have to call your actual NETWORK provider and have them swap the router if it is defective or replace bad cables causing poor networking. Also worth mentioning that an access point may help with your connection if you plan to be using the HR54 wirelessly and the router is far away.

This is almost always caused by having multiple connections to the internet. If your HR54 is connected, no other boxes should be. Other receiveres get their connection through the HR54.

Thank you both.  I had a HR44 that they swapped out to try the HR54.  And both were tried with or without the DECA BBs.  I have an Arris modem.  Surfboard DOCSIS 3.1 modem.  It has been tried hard wired and wireless.  Everything causes the same issue.

Hello @librahi , thanks for reaching us.

Just to make sure, is the error starting when you try to access the on demand content or once the receiver is connected to internet?

Have you tried to complete an internet speed before and after you connect the receiver to internet?

Let's make sure we're following the right steps to connect your Genie receiver to internet.

We can also try to refresh your DIRECTV service and equipment, then you can connect it to internet again and check if it works.

Let us know how it goes.

@DIRECTVhelp thank you!  It starts as soon as we connect to the internet.  Wireless or wired.  Everything crashes.  Computers, whole home audio/video system, etc.  I have not tried to complete an internet speed before.  And I have had two guys come out to try to fix it.  They have refreshed and completely replaced receivers.  Still doing the same thing.  So it must be internet/modem related?  Thank you again.

What other DVR/Receiver model numbers do you have? You should not need a DECA with the HR44 or HR54 Genie DVR. Should be as simple as just connecting ethernet to your home router/switch.

Also, what are the symptoms when it "crashes" your home network? Details, please.

Also, are you letting your router assign IP addresses (DHCP), or are you using fixed IP addresses?  This sort of problem could be caused by an IP address conflict.

Thanks for the details, @librahi.

What is your current internet speed? Also, was the same issue happening with the Genie HR44?

We just want to confirm because It seems that at the moment of connecting the receiver, the internet network is saturated. How many devices do you connect to internet at the same time?

You can also contact your internet provider and try to upgrade your internet speed.

We appreciate the information.

@litzdog911 we have a small client and that's it.  When it crashes, the entire internet goes out.  I can't use my computer.  I can't use my remote controls (Savant).  Our alarm system beeps to tell us there is ethernet trouble.  Only way to fix it is to disconnect Directv internet and reboot my entire system.  Takes about 5 minutes.  I am not sure about the router.  My AV guys set it up.  I will ask!  Which do you suggest?

@DIRECTVhelp

627.2 mbps download

33.8 mbps upload

latency 9 ms

We have plenty of devices connected but have had more in the past in a different home with no issues.  We run our home system on Savant.

Typically a router is configured to take care of assigning IP addresses (called "dynamic IPs"). When folks use fixed IP addresses ("static IPs"), things can get messy if two devices are configured to the same IP address.

We appreciate the details @librahi .

Thanks to @litzdog911 for great clarifying questions. We have a couple more to add:

1. Did you have DIRECTV Services at your previous location? If so, did you encounter any similar issues?

2. Did you have Savant's home automation in a previous location, or has that only been in the new home?

Thank you!

This certainly looks like an addressing problem to me. Since the same thing happens to both the Hr44 and Hr54, its not a DVR issue. Two devices with the same IP address would cause this sort of issue.

For the OP: descriBe your installation. What devices do you have? Are your IP addresses fixed and if not what is doing IP address allocation?

After reading these suggestions, our AV guys got the main HR54 connected with no issues.  Made sure the MAC address and everything were wet.  But when we plug in the little client, it all crashes.  Confirmed those settings too but for some reason, that's what is causing the issues.  Do we just need to try another client?

You can do but I suspect this is something else. Where are you plugging in the client?  The client to HR54 communication is over the coax and uses a completely different internal network that has nothing to do with the internet.

Hi @librahi, happy to help.

Have you tried unlinking the DIRECTV receivers from the internet network? to check if the issue persist or if we get a different result.

We'll wait for your response, let us know how it goes.
