DirectTV's Ridiculous return procedure resulting in them claiming that they did not receive equipment

I am an ex AT&T employee so I know the return procedure well.  I took my DirectTV equipment to a UPS store.  They instructed me to hold onto the receipt as they do not store return information.  (returned around August of 2017)  I kept the receipt for a year and did not hear anything about it not being returned.  No follow up bills, no notifications.  Which I would assume based on the stipulation that if the equipment is not returned within 3 months (I think) I would be charged, which again, I was not.  After a year past, I threw away the receipt.  But as luck would have it, I then get a notice from a collector stating I still owe for the equipment.  I Do NOT have the equipment.  I returned it according to instructions.  It it NOT my responsibility to get that equipment back to the asset tracking department.  I need this issue resolved.

Well, you throwing away the shipping receipt wasn’t a smart idea after all. I understand your pain, it’s happened to all too many times. Try giving a call to DIRECTV (number in my greeting below) and seeing what one of their agents can do for you. If you still have your DIRECTV account information from when you were a customer they could possibly clear the non return fee from the account.

I would write a certified letter to the collection agency requesting them to send you proof of the debt.  Most of the time they cannot prove you owe them anything because they buy debts from the companies and they will have no proof to back up their claim that you owe them money.  They have to send you proof of the debt within 30 days depending on what state that you live in.  I would look into it because they could potentially file a judgment against you because of the debt if you do not respond!  You can also chat with a DirecTV customer service agent and see what they have to say about you owing them anything then you would have proof in the ways of a chat transcript and have what they tell you recorded and you can dispute it with them before responding to the collector!
