Directv r-15 phone problems

I have had this DVR for over a year and we were able to order PPV with the remote until about three weeks ago. When I try to order with the remote the channel tunes in for about 1-2 minutes and then goes to a blue screen stating I need to contact Customer service to order. Our phone line is good up to where the line connects inot the DVR ( I connected a landline up to the line). When we called customer service a few weeks ago we went thru their Troubleshooting procedures but still can't order via remote which is a pain having to log in or call on the phone for a show. Is there a way to check to see if the modem that dials out is bad without having to send the receiver back to them?
Seems like the caller id is no longer working either. Is the box dead?
