Disk Space Full

has someone successfully connected a SATA device to the Direct TV HDDVR??  i have purchased the SATA, ESATA cable and USB cable for power to the SATA.  it does not record and at this time Direct TV Tier 1 said it's the SATA device must be bad.  i took the SATA to a Tech Guru who had a SATA connection on his notebook, the SATA is recognized and he also initialized the SATA.  it still does not work.

Any SATA drive you intend using on a Directv DVR is just as well kept away from any computer.  Are you setting this up correctly?  Unplug AC power from the DVR.  Connect the eSATA cable from the drive to the DVR.  Plug the eSATA Drive into AC power (don't try using the USB port on the DVR)  Wait at least two minutes, then plug the AC power into the HD DVR.  This is the only start up sequence that will work.  If you have a drive with both USB and SATA ports and were connecting both to the DVR, that's likely why it wouldn't work.

i thought this was DirectTVso i responded with frustration.  i apologize i have also never used a forum before, i just caught on to Forum in the address.  so i cannot respond in the text of your body... it is not visible?

So since the DirectTV tech told me to use a computer to see if the SATA would be recognized and i did as requested the device is now compromised?

i'm doing what DirectTV is telling me to do.

this is the first i've heard about using AC power for the SATA.  what is the correct power supply to purchase so i don't fry the SATA?

thanks

What brand/model external SATA drive did you buy?  It should have included its own power supply and correct eSATA connection cable.

Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB Notebook Hard Drive at Best Buy's suggestion, no power supply.  i then went to Halmark computer and purchased the Hard Drive enclosure which came with a Serial ATA 26AWG and a USB Shielded High Speed Cable 2.0 28AWG and separately purchased the ESATA cable.

Apparently that combination doesn't work.  Not all eSATA drive work well.  And this one relies on an SATA-to-USB conversion.  Furthermore, there's no benefit to using a 500GB external eSATA drive because your DVR already has an internal 500GB drive.  And since the external drive replaces the internal drive, not add to it, you're not getting any additional storage capacity.

i did want 1TB but no success finding one locally, yet.  i'll return everthing and start over.  i'm going to check out the link that dcd recommended and find out if Halmark computer store can order one of those drives.
