That's the wrong remote to program with an HR44. You want an RC73 remote. 

It's the remote my parent's were given, and it's worked for years. How can it be the wrong one?

The HR44 is made to be programed in RF and that remote doesn't work in the correct RF format for it to do so.

The RC6x remotes are designed for the older HD Receivers and DVRs. The newer Genie equipment uses the RC7x remotes. 

Ah so I should get them a newer DTV remote and then I should be able program it to control the soundbar?
