What is the DVR's model number?

Get an external USB-powered fan, like those used for laptop computers, to improve your DVR's cooling. Then call DirecTV for a replacement after you've viewed any critical recordings. Replacements are free if you have their Equipment Protection Plan, otherwise $20 for shipping.

It is against the TOS to open DTV receivers and yes you lose all recording and settings when replaced.
