DVR playback freezes intermittently; locks out any other action when frozen
Just got off the line with a Directv rep after experiencing this problem starting today. At first I thought it was the recording I made only hours ago. Then, I tried playing many of the other programs I recorded and previously watched with no issues. Same results, as the program progressed, the picture would freeze and the sound would stop. Sometimes for seconds, sometimes minutes, and sometimes forever.
When the picture is frozen, none of the remote or front panel controls would function. The only way out was to wait until the program resumed and then try to do something else before the next pause occurred. Hitting the reset button or unplugging were the only ways to recover if the freeze never self-reset.
The rep took me through another red-button reset with no change in results. We even unplugged the SWM switch to check it, but that seemed a stretch and also didn't make any difference.
The receiver portion of the box still works fine, so I suspect there is an issue with the hard-drive read head. The rep has scheduled a tech to troubleshoot and bring a replacement if necessary. The unit is about a year old, which doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy about this technology.
