External hard drive question

I am interested in expanding my hard drive space with an external hard drive. I have a laptop that recently crapped out and the hard drive is still good. It is a Western Digital Scorpio (WD1600BEVS). Rather than buy a "recommended" external drive, would I be able to buy an eSata 2.5 enclosure and use it with my HR20-700?
