frozen grey picture after updating software for HD DVR model#HR24
So I had Directv installed on the evening of 08-11-11 have 2 standard boxes, 1 hd box and 1 HD DVR. After watching tv for about 3 hours on my HD DVR I get a message on the screen saying "if I'd like to upgrade the software" or "do it later?" so I choose to update now. After the receiver restarted itself and does the 2 steps then it just goes to a blank grey screen. I've called Directv their agents walk me through a restarting process and nothing fixes the problem. So Directv said that a local distributor or whatever is suppose to call me within 24hrs and it's been 12hrs!!!! being a new customer I'd thought Directv would be on it ASAP to fix my issue but no!!
if anyone has had the same issue happen to them please help!!! Thank you

Did you try resetting that DVR using the red button behind the front panel access card door?

How is the HR24 connected to your TV? Do any of the DVR's other video outputs work properly?

Try disconnecting the HDMI (assuming that's what is being used) at BOTH ends and using a yellow composite video connection.
Here is the question, is the receiver actually responding but you simply cannot see the picture? If that be the case the lights on the front of the DVR will go off, on, and rotate etc as the reset proceeds. If the lights are static, then the box is bad. You may have a simple case of HDMI handshake, and if that be the case, the yellow composite will so indicate. If you used component, that will carry a HD signal.

@dcd. The reciever just stays on. All the blue lights stay on and all I see on my tv is a frozen grey/blue picture. The top part of the screen just shows the name of the channel I watched last before the issue started and the rest of the screen is just grey. I try to change channels, press the menu button etc and the box doesn't respond, nor powering it off by remote.

Are you positive that the TV is set for HDMI input? If the Directv remote is set to control the volume of the TV's speakers, simply pushing the input button on the remote will switch the TV's input setting.
