Gemini disappointment

Got the new dtv Gemini upgrade for free with extending my contract.  This replaced a genie mini 4k that was sent back when Gemini came in.

The Gemini is trash.  Turns off on its own ( yes energy save is turned off) and there is no rhyme or reason to when it happens.  Apps buffer and never had the issue prior.  Will randomly go into app mode on its own ( has happend a few times). The remote itself is flakey. Will control volume sometimes and other you can press volume multiple times with no response ( yes batteries are new).

It's has been unplugged and red button reset multiple times.

I started a chat with dtv to send Gemini back and get a genie mini back.  Was told no problem and was emailed a return label, but I had to call customer service to get the genie sent to me. Ok no problem.

This is where it gets infuriating!!!!!  After being transferred from dept to dept.  I'm told "will give you premiere protection plan for free". After questioning the guy he confesses " free for 3 months then an additional $13 a month.  No!!!   Then it was " we can send you a genie mini for $199). Absolutely not I'm returning defective equipment and your sending back what I had...  Countless back and forth then it " ok will send you one for free but with another additional 2yr contract". (Edited per community guidelines)!!!!   Then " how bout we meet halfway $100 and no contract?".  No!!!!!

I have been a dtv customer for over 20 years and never considered dropping there service but if this is how they run now it might be what I have to do...

I put the replacement ordeal to the side for now and ask them to fix or replace the Gemini l, and have a tech coming out Monday.  Not sure if it will do any good.

Anyone else having these issue or know how to simply get my genie mini back and return Gemini without them charging for the box or upping contract?????

I had a Genie2 (HS17) which was installed connecting two 4k Genie Minis by coax. One directly from the SWIMM module and the other off a splitter which also went to the Genie2.

I got my Gemini on Feb 2. It came with a " Gemini Wired Device Connection Kit" and "Gemini Wired Device Setup Guide". All I had to do was replace the Genies with an Ethernet/Coax Adapter. Connect that to the Gemini.

Everything needed was in the box. Are things different now?

No, but sometimes not all the parts come with the Gemini.  That Gemini wired device is also called a DECA BB.

I have Genie 2 tower and a wireless Gemini. The coax is connected to the Genie 2. What I am trying to understand is how to hook everything together, so I can also use the DVR in the Genie 2....in case I get the

You need to add a 2way SWM splitter to add the Gemini as a wired device.  You disconnect the coax from the dish from the back of the HS17 then connect it to the single "IN" port on top, then the you add a short coax from the red power pass through port on the SWM splitter to the HS17.  The other port is connected to the coax going to the Gemini.

Is there a difference between the wired Gemini and the wireless Gemini, or is just the DECA addition to make it wired? I guess my question is can I make it wireless later, like to remove the DECA....once they fix their issues. Thank you.

Yes, but wired is the best way to connect DTV receivers as wireless can have interference and distance problems.

So no updates for the Gemini resetting itself every hour?

Just to make sure I understand, "wired" means getting the streaming DTV from the satellite from the Genie to a client via the coax? (MoCA)

DTV satellite is not streamed.  Yes wired means connected by coax and technically not MoCA as DTV doesn't need internet to work.

Ok, was trying to figure out the common terminology, and "hardwired" to me usually means a hardwired Ethernet as opposed to Wi-FI... ok... i get what you say.

DTV is not streamed? I think the definition gets fuzzy when you play an on demand channel.. why is that not streamed? No reason to argue, but probably open to interpretation.

But MoCA being related to the Internet???

MoCA though, been used by DirecTV to send data on coax forever, at least since 2010.... MoCA is an Ethernet technology normally used on coax, and there are different frequency bands, per coexistance with Cable TV freqs, DTV freqs, and exclusive use of the coax.

How do you think the mini gets a recording from a genie 2 over coax? Ethernet packets over MoCA. Recordings are stored as data files.

MoCA is a data transmission protocol, normally Ethernet packets, and has nothing to do with the Internet per se.

In the future, I'll be sure to be specific when using the term "wired" and indicate whether it is an Internet connection, or a Local network connection, or the DTV MoCA used over the coax.

On Demand is streamed using the internet.  DTV satellite is live TV sent by the channels to an uplink dish that sends it to the sat and they beam it down to you.

DTV use a different type of MoCA and they call it DTV Ethernet over Coax Adapter aka DECA, MoCA was mainly used to provide internet only whereas DECA provides internet and the channels programing to all DTV receivers/clients.

I have been using the Gemini set top box in multiple homes and have no complaints whatsoever.

My positive experience is based on setting up a new DirectV Stream account, and using the Gemini boxes in a pure Internet environment.

After reading some of this thread, it appears that customers are using the new Gemini boxes together with existing satellite boxes (Genie & Genie Mini)?

not happy my comment was deleted.

there is no "different" kind of MoCA, it is a standard. The DECA is just a coax to Ethernet bridge.

why are correct answers censored?

OK, so a tech came yesterday and installed the DECA to the Gemini.....well, guess what....the box still rebooted. I am completely lost at this point. I have no idea what causes that!
