SWM or Single Wire Multi switch is DirecTV's newest technology to deliver the signals from the dish to the receivers. is only available with HD slimline dishes and NOT all receivers are SWM compatible. there are two "flavors" of SWM. a SWM LNB and a SWM switch. a SWM LNB is capable of driving 8 tuners max (DVR=2, receivers =1). the SWM switches comes in two "sub-flavors" a SWM 8 and a SWM16. a SWM8 is the same as a SWM LNB, but it requires a legacy four output LNB to drive the switch. a SWM 16 is like two SWM 8 in one housing with DECA bridging between the two segments. a SWM16 can drive unto 8 tuners max in each of its two outputs.

why you ask?

Why do you care?

Press the remote's Dash (-) button .... does the DVR echo "SWM connected ...."?

I don't really care - except for the fact that the question is asked at the top of the page when submitting questions on the forums, so it must have some significance. And I'm just trying to learn about the system. OK?

When I push the dash key, it says "SWiM connected"

Then you have the SWM equipment.  It's a newer satellite signal distribution technology that eliminates the need for two satellite feeds to both DVR tuners and allows for DECA (networking over coax) technology to support Whole Home DVR networking.

Absolutely a good idea.  The current HD Whole Home (SWM) DVR system with Nomad, Directv2PC, Mediashare and Cinema Plus is unlike any system you've ever had, so learning all about each of these features is actually fun, at least from where I stand.  Ask anything you like, in any of the forums.  Also along the right margin of the Forum home page are links to some info on each of the features.

I think Peds query was aimed at "are you having difficulties" rather than don't ask.
