Greatly reduced RF range

For the past 2 years I have used my RC24 remote control in RF mode to control a H20 receiver located 2 rooms away. The H20 developed a problem and was replaced by a DTV tech with an H21-200. Once everything was programmed, the range that the RC24 will operate the tv is in the direct vicinity of the receiver 8 ft or so. I know the RF is working as it controls the receiver thru a wall (out of line of sight) but no more that 8 ft range. The H20 had an external antenna and the h21 does not.. I know that this range is lees than it should be but why... It worked perfectly with the H20 and a great ranges..
