HD channels? SD channels? Both?
How is the HR24 connected to your TV?
Have you tried pressing the remote's FORMAT button to cycle the various size/format options?

To fill in a bit. Those gray boxes are called "letter boxes" and are produced by the HR24 to fill the sides of your HD TV when you are watching a SD program channel. You can change the color to black if you like, or set the default to "stretch" rather then letter box. The receiver will stretch the picture to fill the screen. Note that everyone will appear to be moonfaced and wide beamed if you stretch it.

and you can only "stretch" on a non-HD channel. when an HD channel broadcast a 4:3 picture, the "grey bars" are actually part of the picture placed by the station.

yea go to (system setup) then choose the (hdtv) option from the categories listed, on the video tab it will say (bar color) chose black and your screen will at least look better.
