HDMI connection causes DVR to ignore DTV remote
I have two HR-22 DVRs and everything worked flawlessly until I replaced my old TV with a Vizio E370VL 1080p HDTV. I use an HDMI cable to connect them, and ever since that was done, the HR-22 often will ignore all remote input until I switch the input of the TV to the other unit or pull out the HDMI cable or turn off the TV for example. I have three identical DTV remotes (RC64R) with good batteries, and it works the same with any of them. The TV is definitely feeding something back to the HR-22, because when I switch the input of the TV to the other HDMI input and back to the first one, it usually works then. Or if I turn off the tv, it also works. I can tell this because when you press a button on the DTV remote, the little blue power button light flashes indicating that an IR signal is being received. Except when the box is ignoring the remote. The worst thing is when the HR-22 box goes into "screen saver" mode it usually cannot be brought out by the remote unless I do something to the TV like switch inputs around or push a button on the front of the HR-22. It must be HDMI related because when I run the HDTV using component input and not HDMI, the remote controls the HR-22 (both of them, actually) flawlessly like it did the old TV. So the Vizio is doing something to the HR-22 that causes it to ignore remote IR input, but I have no idea what. I have TWO HR-22 boxes, and the problem exists on both with the new Vizio. So I can probably rule out a defective remote (I have three), or the DTV box (I have two connected to the TV). It definitely has something to do with the HDMI feature, and some feedback the HR-22 is getting from the TV that is confusing it, but have no idea what. HDMI must be a two-way connection. Also, when the remote cannot do anything with the HR-22, pushing any button on the front of that box will then allow the remote to work with it again. I don't see how the TV can do anything to the box to make it ignore the remote control, this makes no sense. But that is what is happening, but only with the HDMI input, not the component. Has anyone ever heard of this happening at all? I will have to take back the TV and get another brand I suppose, unless I can figure out what is the problem. Assume it is an issue with the Vizio TV. BTW, the picture in all aspects is perfect, the audio is perfect, everything is perfect except for this very annoying feature of having the remote control ignored fairly regularly.
