Are your other HD receivers missing HD channels also? If so, what message are you getting on the screen?

I did call in and what happened was this: I asked them to deactivate my HD receiver in the bedroom since we don't have a tv in there for the time being ... we moved it to the living room until we can get something new for the living room ... well when they did that, somehow that removed the HD pack from our account -- the receiver in the living room is the standard def DVR ... they told me I couldn't get the HD programming on the standard DVR -- so they offered a free upgrade to the HD DVR, which I took, I do have to pay the shipping, so I "assume" that means I will have to hook it up because they didn't schedule a tech to come out?
So I just set up a new channel list for only the standard def stations for the time being ... at least it wasn't something major this time around ... 🙂

That's right. The R22 is actually consider a "standard definition DVR". It's only HiDef if you already have other HD Receivers/DVRs on your account. When you deactivated that bedroom Receiver you broke their system's ability to have your R22 be an HD DVR. Connecting the replacement HD DVR should be a simple swap with your current R22.

I didn't know that at the time or I probably wouldn't have deactivated it ... now if I can get a second receiver for the bedroom without paying an arm and a leg for it ... I have the deactivated HD receiver to send back -- that's what they told me to do when I get the kit to send it back and then I have the standard DVR in the living room that I would like to put in the bedroom ... not sure if I can do that? can I? or do I have to pay for a tech to do it for me?

That would be a great move to put the R22 in your bedroom. As you've discovered, it can act as an HDDVR when you have another HD receiver active on your account. If you have only one coax line run to your bedroom, you can operate the R22 in the single tuner mode. Menu>Parental favs & setup>system setup>satellite>repeat satellite setup. Then pick single tuner.

Do you currently have one or two coax cables connected to your R22 DVR? If one, then you likely have the newer Single Wire Multiswitch setup, so moving boxes is pretty easy. If you have two cables connected, then you would need add a second coax cable from the dish for the bedroom DVR's second tuner. Best to call DirecTV and have them do that for you. Costs ~$50.

We have a double coax to the dvr in the living room ... and a single coax coming out to go to the bedroom hd receiver currently ... guess it wouldn't make a huge difference if it's only single tuner ... I could also sign up the whole house dvr service also couldn't I, assuming I keep one of the current receivers I already have ... I figured i would just keep the HD receiver I deactivated and send back the current standard DVR from the living room ...

Yes, you could upgrade to WHDVR service. That would get you an upgraded Slimline Single Wire Multiswitch dish, and the networking adapters for your existing equipment. But be sure to call DirecTV and order this, and sort out exactly what Receivers/DVRs you're keeping and what you're returning.

Upgrading to WHDVR will cost you some money upfront plus a monthly fee for that service. The only disadvantage to you in keeping the R22 instead of the HD receiver you disconnected is that if the R22 goes bad, you probably would get a replacement DVR that's not HD or WHDVR compatible.

Personally I wouldn't build a Whole Home system around a R22 as CH said. If it goes bad you are faced with upgrading to a HD box at that time and you'd end up paying $99 for the HD receiver you are contemplating sending back. If it were me, when I received the new HD DVR, I'd call Directv, reactivate the old HD receiver and the new HD DVR and deactivate the R22.

I received the HD DVR yesterday via FedEx ... I have been to sick to set it up ... feeling better today ... So I guess my best move would be to install the new HD DVR in the living room and put the deactivated HD receiver in the bedroom ... and then activate a whole house DVR service ... instead of putting the R22 DVR in the bedroom and sending back the HD receiver ... The only problem is this: I have a ton of stuff recorded on the existing DVR ...

You could activate the HD receiver in your bedroom and restore HD programming, then delay replacing the DVR with the HDDVR and activating whole home until you've watched everything.

That's a good idea ... hadn't thought of that 😉
A quick question regarding the programs that I have recorded on the DVR that I"m going to replace ... if I turn the show on and run it in fast forward can I still tape it through my VCR? or do you have to watch it in normal speed in order to tape onto the VCR?

You'll have to use normal speed to record stuff your VCR. Otherwise the VCR will record the sped up version and it will look funny and be worthless.
