you need to change the SWM LNB to  a conventional 4 output LNB.  then you  would need (4) 2-way  power passing splitters to connect both SWM8 switches.  there is no DECA bridging with this set up.  a SWM16 will make this a lot easier.  why not call DTV and have them install this for you.  for a nominal service charge of $49.00 they will include everything needed to connect that  receiver

I'd guess the original poster was referring to 8 way splitters when they referred to SWM8's.  I am posting a pic of the 8 way splitter and a pic of a SWM8 multiswitch.  Please confirm which you refer to in your original post?

However, regardless of which you refer to, Peds48 is spot on, you need a conventional LNB assembly, 4 coax feed to a SWM16 multiswitch and a pair of splitters to distribute the signals.  The pro install is the way to go.

YES!!

Basically all you need is a Expander and an LNB with 4 outputs. You are looking at about $27 for the Expander and about $48 for the LNB SL5 with 5lnb (4outputs) You can get all this at satpro.tv or you can search the web or call your local directv installer.

i have 2 swim 8 splitters and 2 power supplies-what i need to know is if i can use both by connecting them to each other,i do realize that i won't be able to cross network the recivers on the 2 different splitters but that isn't a problem, also i have 2 receivers that i own that i want to use instead of buying another from directv at $129 which they told me i would have to purchase for them to come out and install a new switch.thanks

Oh I see....

No you can not do 9 receivers... the system will only see 8

You can connect the two "8-waysplitters" but only use onepower supply.

The reason you can not connect 9 receivers is because the LNB has a built in switch. "a SWM8" for only 8 tuners...

I say 8 tunes because you can only connect up to 8 regular receivers or 4 DVRs

I've noticed that you posted in another thread re the use of multiple splitters.  It's apparent you want to be helpful and you should know that Directv has determined that splitter ports in excess of eight are to be avoided, so suggesting 2 eight ways is a bad idea.  For your information this was covered in Technical Bulletin Issue 13 2010 - 7.20.10.  Here is the specific language.

Whole-Home DVR Update

MRV and Splitter Usage:

You should not use any additional splitters when using a SWiM 8 way splitter on a Whole-Home DVR installation. Splitting beyond the 8 way SWiM splitter may cause the receiver to drop the MRV feature.

You should not have more than 2 SWiM splitters (1 SWiM splitter is preferred) on a Whole-Home DVR install to avoid too much dB loss and potential MRV drop off. If 2 SWiM splitters are used, both splitters must be smaller than an 8 way SWiM splitter.

All unused ports on any SWiM splitter must have 75 Ohm terminators torqued to 30 inch lbs.

You should always try to use a SWiM splitter with the least number of ports necessary for the receivers being installed to avoid additional dB loss.

See the Whole-Home DVR (Connected Home) certification course at satinstalltraining.com for proper splitter usage diagrams and dB loss charts.

If you have 9 receivers you will need a minimum of 9 tuners. I don't know how many are DVRs, all DVRs required 2 tuners.

For example, if you have 9 DRVs you will need 18 tuners, if you have 1 DVR and 8 regular receivers you will need 10 turners....

No you can not do 9 receivers with your (2) 8-way splitters.

You will need to have a multiswitch capable of handling the amount of tuners that you have...

The Multishich are SWM16 or SWM32 the SWM16 switch can give you up to 16 tuners and the SWM32 can give you up to 32 tuners.

Then you will use your (2) 8-way splitters on the SWM switch, SWM16 or SWM32. If you go with the SWM32 you will need 3 or 4  8-way splitters.

you will be well advised to have DTV take care of this for you.  if you have the receivers (what models, not all models are SWM compatible) DTV will charge you $49.00 to install each receiver.  this is cheaper than anything you can find, including the hardware

I couldn't agree more.  Wiring up multiple boxes and tuners is tricky business.  Not to be unkind, but if you have to ask someone how to do it, you aren't really qualified.  Besides, Directv installs this stuff at a loss.

just for your information, directv will not hook this up for $49 unless you pay full price for their receivers, which is at least double what you can buy them off ebay and other sites, which is why people want to learn how to do it themselves and i did used to install directv but it was around 1996 so technology has definately changed since then.also , why have a forum when there are certain people who don't want to give you an answer instead try to say your unqualified.duh, that's why there is a forum,do you think the dumbshit directv installer that installed my system is a brain surgeon,he didn't even ground my dish.it still sitting there with no grounding block,as well as he cut every coax in my house and had wires laying everywhere.oh,he also hooked up all my high def boxes with component cables.now tell me you would want someone like that coming back into your house,be my guest,if you aren't on here with a problem or have a solution to someones problem, why are you on here?

well thanks for your input there litzdog911,seems funny you have all those receivers hooked up and only have a swm 8 and a multiswitch connected but you offer absolutely no insight on this post about how you did it,funny how people read forums then leave a worthless comment instead of helping people which this forum is supposed to be about.thanks again and have a nice day
