How to make the following setup work.

I've got my DirecTV console in a cabinet.  It works fine with the door closed because it uses an RF signal.  Also in the cabinet is my Denon AVR-591 surround sound receiver.  But because it is IR, when the cabinet is closed the signal cannot get to it.  My DirecTV remote is currently configured to control the volume via the Denon, but here's my question:

Is there a way to control the volume through the DirecTV console so that I can use RF to control the volume and therefore close the cabinet?

No.  You would need a separate IR Repeater to re-beam the infrared signal into the enclosed cabinet.  You can buy an IR Repeater at places like Radio Shack.

Hopefully that cabinet has good airflow, or you risk overheating your equipment and causing problems.
