How to set up a HDDVR system for tail gating

Hi,

I am new to this forum so excuse me if I'm asking stupid questions.

I just had Direct TV installed in three rooms in my house and intend (next season) to bring Direct TV, tailgating.  I have a second Slimline dish / tripod stand and intend to do a "test run" in the drive way to work out any bugs before hand.

My question is;

Do I need to use the SWM (Single Wire Multi-switch) when setting up for tailgating?  Only one receiver (the main receiver (HD24-500) from home will be brought to the game) so is the SWM required?

Can someone provide detailed instructions, on the connections from the dish, to the receiver, then onto the TV.  I consider myself technically minded so am sure all I need is a little help.  Are there any additional tips that would help?

Appreciate the help and look forward to your reply.

Look at your second Slimline dish/tripod.  Does that dish's LNB have one or four coax outputs?  If it has one, then it's a SWM LNB and you'll need a Power Inserter to use it with your HD DVR.  If it has four, then it's not SWM and you'll need two B-Band Converter (BBC) modules for the HDDVR's two SAT INPUT connectors.  Let us know what dish type you and we can provide exact setup instructions.

Did that dish come with a SWM Power Inserter?  You'll need one.

Here's how to connect and configure ....

  1. RG6 coax cable from dish LNB to SWM Power Inserter "ODU/SWM" connector
  2. RG6 coax cable from SWM Power Inserter "To IRD" connector to HR24 SAT1/SWM INPUT
  3. AC power for SWM Power Inserter
  4. AC power for HR24

Then you'll need to rough-aim your dish.  Use the mapping and aiming coordinates at http://www.dishpointer.com for your location.  They also sell a great SmartPhone App that lets you "see" where the satellites are located using the phone's camera, GPS and compass.

Dish Type Setup Steps:

From the Menu

  • Using the Arrow buttons navigate to - select Parental, Favorites, Setup - press Select button
  • Using the Arrow buttons navigate to highlight - select System Set Up - press Select button
  • Using the Arrow buttons navigate to highlight - select Satellite - press Select button
  • Using the Arrow buttons navigate to highlight - select Repeat Satellite Setup - press Select button
  • Follow the on screen instructions and press the - Dash button
  • A new screen will be shown
  • Use the Arrow buttons navigate to Switch - then press the Select button
  • The HR24 should automatically recognize and configure for the SWM dish. But if it doesn't, In the drop-down box use the Arrow buttons to highlight  "01 SWM" then press Select button
  • Use the Arrow buttons and highlight Dish Type - press the Select button
  • In the drop-down box use the Arrow buttons to highlight "17: Slimline-3S (SWM)" or "18: Slimline-5S (SWM)", depending on if your Slimline has 3 LNBs (one "knob") or 5 LNBs (three "knobs"),  then press the Select button
  • Use the Arrow buttons to navigate to Continue until you can highlight
  • Bring up the signal meters and fine tune the dish alignment to maximize signal readings, especially from the 99 and 103º HD satellites
  • Watch DirectTV
