HOW TO SET-UP DISH FOR TAILGATING: Have no clue what I'm doing

Ok, so I bought a dish, tripod, and satellite finder ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350382585757&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT )

to take to my tailgate spot this fall. 

I decided to do a trial run here at home to figure out how to do this.  I assumed I just had to plug in the reciever/TV and then run coaxial cable from the receiver to the dish.  I'm getting zeros across the board.   (when I run the cable through the satellite finder, it lights up but the needle is dead)  No signal, no matter where I point it.  I tried to mirror the angle/direction I see on my rooftop dish, but still get nothing.

What am I doing wrong?  

Did I maybe get the wrong dish or something?

Is there a good step by step directions somewhere I can use?  

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  The dish is about to be turned into a sled.
