HR20 Dolby Digital audio missing voice track

In the past two weeks, I found these recorded shows were playing with only the background audio tracks:

  • Entourage (HBO East)
  • MotorWeek (WPBA 30 Atlanta)
  • Formula One Qualifying (Speed)
  • Masterpiece Mystery (WPBA 30 Atlanta)

In the HR20, Dolby Digital was set to On.  The HR20 is connected to a Pioneer VSX-1019 receiver over HDMI.  The Pioneer has been in "Pure Direct" mode to accept whatever type of audio signal it receives.  On these shows, the picture is fine and the ambient background sound is fine, but the voices are missing.  Turning Dolby Digital Off on the HR20, the Pioneer shows PCM Direct and the voices return.  With HR20 Dolby Digital On and the Pioneer set to Stereo, the voices return.

Any suggestions on restoring full Dolby Digital audio?

Try switching the Pioneer from "Pure Direct" to "Auto Surround" mode.  I believe the mode I suggest has a greater ability to accept a variety of inputs.

Switching to "Auto Surround" does bring back all of the dialog, which is good.  However, it is in stereo only, not Dolby Digital.  When set to DD, all I get is background audio with no dialog.  The only change to my system previously working system was the DVR software update.

At least some of those programs were not in DD 5.1, I believe. That's why you set the receiver to "auto", you should get 5.1 when it is being transmitted.
