HR22-100 Distorted Video

Had new install today (upgrade due to loss of 72.5). The man took my old DVR and gave me a HR22-100. It is hooked up to my older TV with composite cables. Native is off. The setup program says my TV can handle all resolutions. Here is the problem. When a show is HD (of which I don't need or want), the HR22 goes to 480P. No matter what I do, as long as that show is HD, it will stay at that setting. When it does that, my TV goes black/squiggly. If I take a yellow video and input it to the front of the TV, it works ok. If the show is not HD, it will stay on 480I. This is driving me nuts. Since the TV is older, I don't have many hookups on the back. If I can't use my composite, I will have to jack something in the front, yuck. Any ideas? Thanks.
