HR23 Receiver stuck on receiver running self test.

After a power bump my receiver came on and went to the "Receiver running self test" screen and will go no further. The receiver is set up properly and was operating properly prior to the power bump.

Try pulling the AC power and wait several minutes, then repower. See if it will restart normally.

You should consider getting an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) to protect your DVR's hard drive from these sorts of "power bumps".

If unplugging the AC power didnt work there is a known issue with some HR23 models. You need to reset via the red button and as quick as you can hold the menu and down arrow on the receiver itself until you see "Just a few more seconds please..." message. There will be 2 messages before this stating hello... and almost there.... You need to continue holding menu and down until the 3rd message. The receiver should take a minute or two after the just a few more secs message and you may see the receiver running self check message but should be very breif. If you get stuck in the same spot again you may have not pressed menu and down quick enough and a retry would be suggested.

Call DirecTV to request a replacement Receiver/DVR.  It's free if you have their Equipment Protection Plan, or within 90-days of installation.  Otherwise ~$20 for shipping.  Or ~$50 to have a tech come replace it for you.
