HR24 receiver freezes every once in a while

Every 30 minutes or so the receiver freezes for a couple of seconds, at which point the sound stops as well.  This happens when watching both recorded and live programs.  Happens on all the channels.

I tried restarting the receiver and all the other common tricks.  Any suggestions on what could be causing this?

Do you have other HD DVRs? Do they also have this problem?

Could be a signal-related issue. Could be a hard drive problem.

No, this is the only one. Is there a way to diagnose if this is a hard drive problem, or signal?

There is a way to run a diagnostics test. If you hold down the info button for 3 seconds and then select info & Test and then run system test. If any of the results show 14,15,21 it means its the hard drive. However it could potentially be something with the tuner. Here are some steps I would do:

1.) Run diag test if it states sat dish alignment problem or distribution there could be something wrong with cabling or tuner

2.) Disconnect / reconnect the SAT IN

3.) Reset the reciever by unplugging for 15-30 seconds and then plugging back in

If nothing works above call Directv and you may need a service call to address the issue.

Hope this helps if you need anything let me know!

Please post back with your signal readings for each satellite's transponders (and both tuners if applicable).  You'll find these readings under "Menu" -> "Setup" -> "System Setup" -> Satellite -> "View Signal Strength".  Note the "+" and "-" symbols next to the "Satellite" and "Tuner" entries where you can toggle the readings between the various satellites and both DVR tuners.

Fill in your readings for each satellite and tuner using these examples.  A properly aligned dish will show 80-90s on most of the relevant transponders (although some will be low or zero):

Almost all transponders show 90s, except for one or two to have 0s, and a bunch that have n/a.

I'll take a look at other suggestions and post results shortly. Thanks, for your suggestions.

The diag test gives an error saying there might be dish alignment problems. Would that cause the pausing issues I'm getting?

I don't ever get searching for signal message, the screen just freezes for a few seconds. Could misaligned dish cause that.

Yes it can.  Please use the template I provided in post #5 to submit your signal readings.

Here's the data.  I captured it only for tuner 1, but in all cases tuner 2 had numbers that were very similar to tuner 1.

Check tuner 2 for these signals.  If they are similar then I'd guess that you have a dish problem or less likely a problem with your VR.  In either case I'd call for a service visit.  It's free with the Protection Plan otherwise $50.
