HR24 WH DVR and Internet
I recently upgraded to two new HR24s. I want to use the whole home viewing, do I have to connect them to the internet somehow to get them to work with this? If so what equipment do I need?
I currently have a multi-switch, not a SWM.

You cannot have a Directv approved Whole Home DVR system without SWM equipment. You can call and discuss what they would charge to upgrade you to SWM and Whole Home. That would be the ideal situation.
However, if you run a Cat5 Ethernet cable from each DVR to your router, you can email Directv and ask that your unsupported system be activated. They have been increasingly reluctant as of late, but a few have been activated via email.
If you can't run the cable, then you are pretty well out of luck as wireless simply doesn't have the horsepower to provide reliable streaming.

I have access to the SWM cables, is that difficult to setup? And how does that re configure from the multiswitch? I wouldn't be afraid to just do it myself if it's possible.

the SWM is not a cable. the SWM system comes in two flavors. you can have a SWM LNB or a SWM switch. you would also need a splitter and a power supply. a 21volts for the SWM LNB and a 29 volts for a SWM switch. set up is easy if you know what you doing

I appreciate that. However, converting your system to SWM, then configuring it for Whole Home DVR is beyond the average homeowner, not to mention you'd spend more in parts than Directv would charge you for doing it including all labor.
To pick up on Peds48's post, building cars or TV sets are easy tasks as well, if you know what you're doing. At the very basic level, the average homeowner doesn't have a decent compression tool or any fittings and finding solid copper core coax can be a challenge.

When I try to watch my recorded shows on the non-dvr receiver it gives me a message saying: "Playback Failed. No audio/video data packets received from the server." How can I fix this? I've rebooted/reset and tried to connect to the network, but it won't. My internet is working fine though.

Best to start your own new thread using the "Create New Post" button on the main forum page. Your problem may very well be different from the original poster's. With a new thread you can provide more information about your equipment, location, and troubleshooting you've tried so far. And this forum software makes it difficult to track or respond to folks that add onto someone else's thread.
