HR24-200 Receiver (refurbished)
Recently my previous DVR died. It was an old but dependable DVR. Directv replaced it with a HR24-200-R receiver. I connected it just as I had the previous receiver. I have a dish that has a double head and provides a cable that splits into two separate connectors. I didn't change any way that I had connected it as the previous one. I could not get a proper signal. The picture is fuzzy and is just plain horrible. I called and no technical customer service person could give me any suggestions that corrected the problem. The receiver is a HD DVR and the TV that it is connected to is a 60 inch Sony HD TV that had no difficulty with the previous HD DVR model that I had. I even had a technician come out to see if there was an issue. First off he looked as if he hadn't bathed in weeks and was extremely unprofessional. He came in and grabbed my remote and flipped through the channels and said "There isn't anything wrong with it. You have a great signal." I tried to explain that the picture was now grainy and was not presenting HD picture quality as it should. He said that it was probably my dish. I explained what my dish was and he said "Well, it isn't the DVR or the dish. It's your TV." Needless to say, I asked him to leave as he was not providing any help. Does anyone have any suggestions for settings for the DVR. Specifically which dish type to choose and things that are on that menu when you attempt to set up the DVR. I am so frustrated with the service I can't even think straight. I have been a long time customer (over 15 years) and sending an old refurbished DVR just blows my mind. You would think that they would have sent the most recent model or at least a refurbished recent model. All of the research I have done on this one shows that it has essentially be discontinued by DirecTV and isn't issued anymore except in cases where they replace non-working DVRs. Any help that could be provided would be terrific. It is a model from 2011 and even has reconditioned stickers on it showing that it has been reconditioned 4 times before me. Please help. I originally bought the receivers I had from Best Buy (like I paid for them outright) yet Directv says that it doesn't matter whether I bought the receivers or not. They belong to them. So I pay for the service, I pay a rental fee for receivers (that I bought and own) and I pay for HD DVR service which I now can't even get to show on my TV. I have looked and looked for even an owner's manual and can't even find one online to get any suggestions or directions. It's a shame how far DirecTV has fallen in their customer service. Again, any suggestions or directions or even telling me where an owner's manual might be would be great. The picture I get now has been reduced to a picture with the black bar at the top and bottom. No matter what changes I make that is the only picture that is clear so I leave it at that. Thanks.

What model is the box it replaced?
If you had two coax coming in, then perhaps you have the older multi switch setup. If so there are other updates that may be needed. At the very least go into the display settings and resolution and make sure the highest one your TV supports is checked.
Sending a refurbished DVR is the only option as the HR24 is the very last model made before they moved to SWM-only boxes, which are the Genies.
Whether provided from DirecTV itself or an authorized retailer, boxes are leased. Any equipment cost is paid up front. There is no rental cost. The monthly cost is the service for the account, regardless of how many boxes may use it.

Thank you for your reply. I have the box currently set at the highest resolution that is supported and it remains a poor picture. I don't mind a refurbished box but after it has been refurbished several times I really think it should be removed from service. If I buy the box at a store then directv should make sure that sellers are up front about a further cost and not allowing the store to say that the buyer now owns the receiver. I have been told buy directv that if I was to end service I would return all receivers despite having bought them outside of directv. I give up. These companies shouldn't be able to monopolize service anyways. The "fees" that are constantly added and extra costs for no increase in service are insane. Thanks again for your help.

Also, what satallite settings do I choose. I have an oblong dish that has the double head receiver in the dish. It comes out with one coax cable but it splits at the end to provide two coax connections to allow the receiver to watch one channel and record another.

You can't buy a receiver at a brick and mortar store legally and online dealers have labels in the description saying they are refurbished as the HR24 hasn't been made for a least 10 years and it was the latest model made before they went to the Genie model. Can you post a picture of the dish as it maybe to old as all DTV dishes I've seen has one LNB with 1 or 3 horns and the old LNBs had to have a coax run to each receiver or 2 for a DVR and can't be split.

No store should say you own the box. Shortly after the 1st Genie was launched years ago they stopped all owned options, which were rare at that point anyway. So the store is at fault for wrong info, and it is not allowed by AT&T/DirecTV. Simply they are human workers, not programable robots, so sellers make mistakes (accidental or on purpose).
If you don't have a free upgrade, then one-time lease cost of regular HDDVR is $199. A decade ago in the owned days the full retail cost for purchase to own was $499. Whether you paid owned or lease cost, or had free upgrade, you pay $10 a month for HD service and $10 for DVR service as long you have at least one box that can use the service, regardless if all, some, or just 1 box can make use of it.
New monthly fees are not just added anytime. If you add a service, or upgrade to a higher level of equipment status that comes with a new service, then you see something new on the bill. There is the annual price adjustment that changes the amount of the base costs, per increased costs from the network.
No monopoly as there are multiple TV providers available. Even if you are rural with just satellite then there is both DirecTV and Dish (technical satellite internet as well, but not suggested for streaming services per data allowances).
If you can get a picture of your receiving dish with LNB (the "eye"), that will help figure out what settings you need or if you might need to prepare for an update later, depending on how old the setup is. If the HR24 is not your only box, what are the models of your others? Just want to make sure no surprises later.
