The proper way to unplug is press the red reset button on the right side by the access card and UNPLUG the cord from the outlet (not from the receiver power input) before the HR54 springs back to life and the logo lights up.
The main reason for not unplugging it is that the HR54 provides power to the satellite dish and unplugging may cause the HR54 hard drive or power supply to be damaged.

That is only a warning so it isn't accidentally unplugged, you can unplug it at anytime just like anything else.
