I get Error 771 messages on various HD channels with DIRECTV
I have an HD DVR in our living room. For many months now I get random error 771 messages on various HD channels (approx. 1/2 of our HD channels we pay for). I also have a standard receiver in our bedroom. I can receive ALL the channels on this receiver with no 771 error messages, which leads me to believe the problem is not a dish interference problem. Since I receive all channels on the standard receiver and only certain channels on the living room receiver I would assume there maybe something wrong with the HD DVR receive. However, I have called the 800 number for support multiple times and every time I am told I will have to have a technician come out for a minimum $90 fee to check the my problem. I am considering using the $90 service fee and changing providers. We have rebooted the HD DVR multiple times with no correction occurring. My bill has now CREPT up to approx. $166 a month and I don't get all the channels I am paying for.

What are your Receiver model numbers?
If your "standard receiver" is not HiDef, then it's getting channels from a different satellite. 99% of 771 Error issues are due to dish misalignment. Best to call for a service visit. And note that non-HiDef equipment is being phased out, so you're probably due for a free upgrade. Be sure to ask about that when you schedule your service visit.

Thanks for the response, but I am not going to pay for a service visit! I already pay $166 a month and don't get all the channels I am paying for and when I call customer service the representative is of no use. So it sounds like all trouble shooting has to be done with service calls in order to get more of the customers money!!

There are videos on youtube if you want to try it yourself but there is no way to fix this over the phone.

Well, that's certainly your choice, @Steam
A service visit would fix this problem for you.

Yes, this is probably because you have a weak 99 or 103 signal.. The standard def gets all channels because you're 101 satellite is in alignment. I am having this problem as well with the 99 satellite, so maybe you are in the same predicament I'm in right now. Best to find videos on YouTube or just have someone come out if the roof is too high or unsafe.
