I receive a message that my receiver is too hot and needs to cool down.

I receive a message that my receiver is too hot and needs to cool down. I shut it off and wait for 30 minutes or so and am able to reconnect but then the same message comes up about the receiver overheating.

Is the Receiver in an enclosed cabinet?  If not, then it's likely that the internal fan has failed.

Press and hold the remote's INFO button until the System Information display appears. Scroll down a bit. What's the internal temperature?

It is in an enclosed cabinet but we opened it and put a floor fan near it. The Temp at one time was 138. (It has been off all night.)

My concern is that it happened twice yesterday and never before. We have had the unit for several months with no issues.

Why would it have happened? We had severe thunderstorms yesterday but no power outages or surges.

I have a HR24-500 and it's currently playing and the temp is 106 degrees.  Your box will soon fail at 138 degrees.  Note that the box is always running, when you shut it "off" that just turns off the panel lights and the output ports, the innards and hard drive continue to operate.

Is there a way to cut the back out of the enclosure?  Electronics cabinets routinely have open backs.
