Is it necessary to be connected somehow?

My receiver has never been connected to a phone line but until last weekend it was connect to the internet. The connection quit working in both the DTV receiver and my Roku box. I figure some critter chewed it. Anyway, the Roku box connects wirelessly as well so I've done that, but the DTV box doesn't have that capability. Before I spend $80 for the connection kit I'd like to know if the box even needs to be connected. I don't subscribe to any premium channels so  VOD content isn't available to me. We do watch a few first run movies though. For example, I recorded a movie last weekend and watched it several days later. The movie screen said that I would not be charged for recording the movie, only when I watched it. But now since my DTV box has no connectivity at all how does it tell DTV that I watched the movie?

Thanks

it won't.  you won't be able to order any movies via remote control without the receiver being connected to a phone line or internet.  you can try the texting method to order movies.  there is a lot of free stuff on cinema plus that does not come from the premium channels.  so you might want to think over if you want the receiver connected to the internet again.

Also $80 for the wireless kit. Where are you buying it from? There have been treads that have posted that they got them to ship them the kit for half that price. There are also wireless ethernet adapters availble on other sites for around $30. Reseach a bit and you can get it for less.

When I check my DirecTV.com account, I can order the wireless kit for $30.

True Irish, but the Wireless adapter sold by Directv (model #DCAW1R0-01) is absolutely the best to set up that I've ever seen.  It has the added advantage to being coax capable for use in the Whole Home environment.  When this came out, I stopped recommending any other.

Of course, one could repair the critter chew cheaper.

Thanks for all the input. I guess, I'll connect my receiver after all.

Take care

Just to close this out, I got my DCCK yesterday and the installation couldn't have been easier. It went exactly as the directions said it would. I probably could have got something cheaper, but I doubt very much if it would have setup as easy.

Thanks for your help!
