Is using your own home internet network really an option?

I tried to setup Whole-Home last night over a period of an hour with a CSR.  She seemed quite knowledgable, she read the information that she had, as to a possibility to continue using your own home internet network as a connection for WHDVR, if you were a "beta" participant.  Following the instructions on the posting from 5/13, the options that were there a few days ago were not there, last night.  I was under ther impression that DECA was going to be the only option when this was rolled out nationally.  Does anyone know for sure?  Has anyone tried to get DTV to install DECA for free, if there contract is up for renewal?

jhicken,

I too spent almost an hour yesterday with a CSR trying to "enable MRV" and then "activate Whole-Home DVR Service" on my current home network(no DECA install) and was unsuccessful. All the TECHKNOWGUIDES continue to advise us to be patient and call back until we get a CSR that knows how to do this correctly.

For the life of me, I cannot understand(outside the potential additional revenue from getting "as many DECFA installs as they can") WHY IN THE WORLD did DirecTV just not go into their database and for ALL accounts that have at least one HD DVR and one HD Receiver(or 2 HD DVR's) "create a new Account Attribute for MRV, check unsupported, and ENABLE MRV"!!!!!!!!!!!!! This would allow ANY and ALL customers to simply log into their account and click on "Activate Whole-Home DVR Service".........PERIOD!!!! For those already networked it would be a done deal and for those not they would either need to network their boxes or call to schedule a DECA/SWim install. At that point, DirecTV could "de-activate" the Whole-Home DVR Service for that customer and explain that the Service Tech would have it re-activated following the installation.

Is this too simple of a solution or what??????????????

1. Yes you can have MRV (Whole Home DVR) on your account for $3/mo using your own home network.  Instructions were provided in this forum on how to do it, and many folks here have already.

2. Don't expect "free" DECA installations this early in the rollout.  DirecTV is clearly getting lots of interest, so there's little incentive to give it away for free. Of course, it never hurts to ask politely.

Next time I call to get MRV enabled and Whole-Home DVR Service activated, if the CSR tries to feed me the line that "you must have DECA to get Whole-Home DVR Service" I am going to tell the CSR that:

1. The Technical Forums contain posts by "at least one" DirecTV customer that has had this service enable on their existing home network for $3/month "without" DECA, so if DirecTV could do this for one customer I must insist that they do it for me(whatever it takes) and that there are no other implications that the customers successfully getting this service enabled on their home networks had to upgrade their legacy programming package to get this accomplished(the CSR implied that yesterday and I do NOT want to give up my Total Choice plus HBO/STARZ package that I have had since 1994). That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!!

I think that initially DirecTV did not intened to allow MRV without DECA beyond the beta trials. The decision to allow non-DECA networks came later , which may be the reason that it isn't going as smoothly and simply as everyone would like, including I'm sure the CSRs. It's my understanding that there is a flag on the account that tells the reps that you have MRV without DECA and therefore get no support for MRV issues. I also believe the no support flag also applies to DIY DECA installs.

I called on the day it was released.  Told the CSR I was interested in information on the Whole-Home DVR service and that I was in the beta.  He put me on hold for a minute and came back and answered any question I had.  He was ready to just sign me up for whole-home without DECA since I was already using it.

I'm had them install DECA since the price was right and I was using wireless beforehand.  I have the DECA system going into switches then into multiple devices at the TVs and it works great.  I don't see why they wouldn't support a proper network installation.  100mbit ethernet would support this just fine if the network isn't shoddy.
