Loss Satellite Communications after HD upgrade this afternoon
Came home from work, turned on TV and DVR.... got error 771a, error communicating with dish and the new GUI. IT WAS WORKING BEFORE I LEFT THIS MORNING!!!. I checked signal strength last night and was in the high 90's across all transponders and tuners, etc. What I noticed was before, this was set to a slimline 3 with swm and dual tuners. NOW it it set to slimline number 17 and its LOCKED in at that!!!! I can not manipulate that back to the old setting. But if i remove the power injector to the swm, it loses communication with the SWM and then unlocks the dish type and then I set it to slimline 3 etc, but then I get a 771 without the 'a' error message... so what the hell is going one and how do I fix this????

the right setting is 17 if you have a SWM LNB. make sure the PI is on and has a solid green light then do a red button reset.

I don't think this is anything to do with the upgrade, I think the fact it occurred at the same time is just a coincidence. Far more likely this is just a normal 771a problem.
When you are connected to an SWM system, the receiver autodetects the dish type and you can't change it. As peds says, dish type 17 is correct so it isn't that.
As peds asked, do you have any other receivers and what are they, and are they having any problems? If you don't have any, or they are not HD, then yes this could be an LNB problem, or a cable/connector issue - can you inspect the LNB and see if there are any cracks in the cover, and also check all the connectors? A connector might be OK for the detection of the dish, but not good enough to communicate correctly

If you have SWM, then setting a dish type without SWM would not give you any signal at all.

texas,, before the HD update,, that is incorrect. I am not stupid, I spent a few days trying to get my system to work and it was on 3LNB with swm and dual tuner settings , working great.... after the update,, auto sensing kicked in and it wont work. but i think its the LNB.

Then maybe it's time to call DirecTV. It's free if you have their Equipment Protection Plan, or within 90-days of installation. Otherwise ~$50.

Your last post said that when the system was working the dish was set to 3LNB, SWM and the previous one said it was set to 3LNB no SWM. Which post is correct?

well, turned out someone knocked my dish out of alignment. put my signal meter on it and after checking a few measurements, realized it was off 15 degrees. tuned it back into correct alignment, and boom, back running, sorry for the confusion and thanks for the help!
