Missing odd transponders on 99 satellites "intermittently"

This is happening on and off regardless of the weather. Sometimes I have them, but most of the time I don't. I am also getting the 771 code for some channels on satellite 103 even though there is are signals shown there. (channels 241, 242, etc.) Directv just installed a new HR54R1/500 a few months ago. I have checked and tightened all cable connections. There are the 2 lines that were needed for the old receiver setup, going to the TV area in the living room. Only one line that is being used now with the HR54. I tried the old setup second line to see if that would work and got an error saying it could not communicate with the dish so I switched it back. Not sure why that didn't work. I suspect the LNB from what I've read here. I also have a splitter on the roof - old setup and having another older stand alone DVR in another room. I did adjust the dish slightly and got better signal on these satelittes, but it didn't resolve the problem, sometimes I get them and sometimes I don't. My thought is to order the exact same model LNB and just go from there. Any other suggestions?

  • The tech changed the LNB to a SWM LNB then used one coax to connect to the SWM splitter to both receivers with the HR54 connected to the red power pass through port and the left all other coaxes disconnected.

OK, just received I did the 5 minute install of the new $18 Amazon 3 LNB from Amazon. Problem fixed! Thanks for everone's help.

How do you still have a second line? The dish should be SWM or at least if you have a non-SWM LNB then a SWM8/SWM16. The HR54 requires a SWM system. You are right, it is most likely an LNB issue. You can probably order the same LNB on Amazon, eBay, or Solid Signal.

Otherwise, this could be a splitter issue or bent dish (unlikely).

Does your dish LNB have one or four coax outputs?

Have you checked all of the coax connections outside?

The second line is unattached to the box. It's just laying there. I only tried it in place of the one that was being used to see if it would fix my issue. It is a SWM LNB. The dish isn't bent, it's where nothing can hit it, but the splitter probably should be replaced. Does it matter the order of the connections going into the house on the splitter....I see ones for sale that have "DC power pass" marked on one connection....on the ones for sale that is. Mine is so worn you can't read much on it.

I have checked all connections, except the one to the LNB, I need to do that. Was waiting for a dry day. The dish has one line from the LNB to a splitter with 4 outputs.

Yes, be sure to check the coax connector at the dish and the SWM 4-way splitter.

Is there a way to test the splitter? I'm thinking there might be a issue...I would have thought the second line that was used when I needed a 2 cable system to my old receiver, should have worked OK when I tried it on the new receiver. Instead I got a notice that it couldn't communicate with the dish....

Can you bypass the splitter and run the wire straight to the HR54? No SWM power inserter needed as the HR54 outputs the 21V itself. If you have a coax coupler you can add that where the splitter is to get the HR54 by itself.

That's a good idea.....

Hey, I just found a new splitter just like I need in my junk bag! I know it has a DC power pass connection, one for the LNB one one side, and one marked on the other side where there is 4 of them. Maybe that's why my second wire didn't work....the connection to the HR54 has to be on the DC power pass connection - and the one I am using is? Might this be correct?

Right, the HR54 should be providing power unless you already have a SWM Power inserter connected with another receiver. The rule is wherever the power inserter/HR54 is you should have that coax port on the DC POWER PASS.

SWM is ONE WIRE PER RECEIVER. You should NEVER need two, that’s non-SWM systems.

OK, I put the new splitter in and no change. I checked the LNB cable connection and it looks good. Unscrewed it a bit and retightened. I then tried that second wire that wasn't attached and screwed that into the receiver, and put it on the DC power splitter connection. Still have the same problem as before. Only other thing beside the LNB, there is a connection for both cables in the basement, just to lengthen the cable I assume. They look good and are tight. But with both lines working the same, my guess would be the LNB? Another question, should the splitter be grounded, looks like screws on the splitter for that, but mine wasn't.

Not the end of the world if it isn’t grounded but definitely recommended to ground the satellite system. (FYI I never grounded my systems and nothing bad ever happened.)

You should definitely try a replacement LNB and let us know the results. Also, check for moisture on the coaxial cables (specifically the copper area).
