multiple splitters - how to daisy chain

Hello,

I am trying to figure out what I need to daisy chain a couple SWS splitters.

I have an SWM integrated LNB on my roof. It has one wire coming out to a SWS4 (outside). One wire goes towards the bedroom, and two others towards the family room.

In the family room, I want to have 7 receivers (+ 1 in the bedroom). One of the runs in the family room is connected to a power inserter.

Here's where I need help: I want to connect the other run to a SWS8 (http://www.amazon.com/Directv-8-Way-Wide-Band-Splitter/dp/B0045DVIP4 ). Do I need a second power inverter for this splitter? If so, would it be 21V or 29V, and how would I wire it?

Any help would be appreciated. I have not seen information about daisy chaining splitters, so I am not sure if it is possible. I don't know if I need a multiswitch or not (of if the SWM integrated LNB is enough).

Thanks,

Mark

Hi, you do not need an additional power supply. One power supply will do. But you can only have up to 8 tuners.. for example you can have 8 regular receivers or 4 DVRs.

The way to daisy chain is as fallow.

Actually the Directv guidelines prohibit more than 8 splitter ports on a SWM dish.  Here is a direct quote from the Technical Bulletin:

You should not use any additional splitters when using a SWiM 8 way splitter on a Whole-Home DVR installation. Splitting beyond the 8 way SWiM splitter may cause the receiver to drop the MRV feature.

You should not have more than 2 SWiM splitters (1 SWiM splitter is preferred) on a Whole-Home DVR install to avoid too much dB loss and potential MRV drop off. If 2 SWiM splitters are used, both splitters must be smaller than an 8 way SWiM splitter.

Do I need to get a SWM 16 multiswitch  (with a new LNB) if I want to go more than 8?   (I have 8 receiveers, but two are DVR's, so it sounds like this acts as 10)

Is this an installation upgrade DirecTV will do for me for the $49 fee, or do I have to manage it myself?

Yes, you'd need a SWM16 multiswitch for the ten tuners.  Directv install is the way to go here, the parts would likely cost you more than they will charge.

How do I enlist Directv's help? Do I need to call, or can I schedule online?

Yes if you have more than 8 tuners you will need to purchase a switch that will allow for more than 8 tuners like the SWM16 or SWM32.

Now you will also need to change your LNB, the SWM LNB you have will not allow you to add a SWM16 multiswitch.

You will need to get the SL3, or SL5 LNB as well

As far as cost, you will be looking at around $330 if you were to do it yourself.

Great - thanks. I called them and had to add a receiver through them to get an installation tech scheduled. I told them to put in the notes that I would like to upgrade the LNB and add a SWM16 multiswitch - hopefully the tech comes prepared!

if by adding that receiver puts you over the 8 tuner limit, DTV's automated ordering system will add the SWM16 switch automatically.  the CSR's can't add support hardware.

Why does any one need 7-8 recievers in one location in an average home?  8 locations within the home is bad enough.

It all comes down to the NFL. To watch all the NFL games at once on Sundays during the fall you need 8-9 receivers in one room (the 1pm Sunday timeslot usually has 8-10 concurrent games).

Ped48_installs: quick question - is that counting DVR's (even SWM DVR's with one coax input port) as two receivers? So if I have 2 DVRs and 5 other HD receivers, this will trigger the SWM16 in the ordering system?

Yes.  It's based on number of tuners. DVRs have two tuners, Receivers have one.  SWM8 = 8 tuners. SWM16 = 16 tuners.
