need help setting up my directv at the campground...

Hey guys,

I am wanting to take my H24-700 receiver camping with me, I will also be hooking it up to an HD tv.. What dish do you guys recommend I use at the camp site... Currently at my house I have a slimline 5 lnb setup, What dish do I need inorder to get all of my hd and nfl sunday ticket channels? I was looking at the 18x20 3 lnb multisat dish on ebay, will that dish work with my receiver and get the channels I want? is there a cheaper option? and are there any options I would change on the receiver when connecting it to a different dish?

thanks

You need a Slimline 5LNB dish like you have at home. The 18x20" Phase III 3-LNB dish will not receive any HD channels.  And if you get the same dish that you have home, then you won't need to change any of the Satellite Setup options.

Are you sure that your home dish is not a Single Wire Multiswitch dish?  Press the remote's "Dash (-)" key .... does the TV display "SWM connected"?

Thanks for the reply!

im pretty sure that I do not have a SWM.. I have 4 wires coming from the dish into the house.. OK so the 18x20 will not get hd channels, does it still work with SD channels, (and is that 110 or 119) and is it actaully compatible with my H24-700 receiver? What about the old 18" round dish, will it still work for SD channels as well.. I ask that because I have an old 18" dish and lnb out in my barn..

Not sure what satellite Sunday Ticket SD is on, but assuming it's the 101, then the old round dish will work.  Of course you are taking a HD TV and a HD receiver and connecting those to a SD box.  If that is okay with you then it's will likely be okay.  Before you decide, wait for one of the guys to confirm that NFL SD is on the 101 satellite.  You'll need to change the dish in the H24 from SL5 to round.

I would like to get the HD eventually, but if my current old 18" round dish will at least get me the SD channels, that will hold me off until I order another dish. I just wasnt sure if that old dish would even work with one of the newer h24-700 receivers.. Also would I be able to get locals on the 18" dish, because arent they single lnb's and only hit one satellite?

SD Sunday Ticket channels are beamed from 101ºW, so an 18" round dish will receive them.

not sure where you locals come from (satellite), but if you have a 5LNB at your house it must be because your locals are beamed from the 119 sat.  if that is the case, you would need at least an 18x20 dish to receiver those locals.  this is assuming that you don't wander too far away from your service address (your home) because if you do, no dish will get you locals.  locals are beamed via spot beams aim at the specific city that needs those locals, if you go out of that spot beam, you get no locals

Yes, your local SD channels are beamed from the 119ºW satellite.  So you would need an 18x20" Phase III 3-LNB dish to receive those, provided you're located within their spot beam coverage area as peds48 points out.

Thanks again guys.. this is great info!!

So if I use an 18x20 3 lnb dish, I could hit 101,110,119...(as long as im in my locals spot beam)..  So that would pretty much give me all of my channels except for HD programming right? So is that the difference between the 5lnb and 3 lnb... just the 99 and 103 hd sats?

Also how many sats can my old 18" round dish hit at a time? is it just one, so I could only hit 101 or 110 or 119?

Thanks alot I really appreciate all the help!!

Right, no HD channels with that dish.

There are two different 3-LNB dishes .... the old Phase III 18x20" dish that receives the 101, 110 and 119ºW satellites (no HiDef), and the newer Slimline 3-LNB dish that receives 101ºW (SD) and 99/103ºW (HD channels).   Your home 5-LNB Slimline receives all of those satellites (99, 101, 103, 110 and 119ºW).

Your old 18" round single LNB dish can only receive 101ºW.
