Network Security

Are there any vulnerabilities to my network in allowing a DCEA installation.  It would seem that Directv would have a backdoor into my network if I understand the end result of the installation process.

Not really.  But if you're worried about that, just don't connect the DECA network to your home internet connection.  The DVRs/Receivers only need to talk to each other for multi-room viewing, not the internet.  Internet access is only needed for services like On Demand downloads.

If you do choose to connect to the internet, it's no more dangerous than the phone connection.  DirecTV will use the internet connection to get PPV purchase info, information about your satellite reception, and stuff like that.  But there's no way any hackers would be able to access your computers if that's what you're worried about.

If you use deca then you can't also use ethernet for VOD ? So you would have to connect to the internet via DECA ? Just asking, I don't know the answer but it sounds that way. When I get DECA I will connect it to the net with no worries, but I'm curious. Thanks for all you are doing in this difficult time.

Correct.  Customers have the choice when they have the Whole-Home DVR service installed with DECAs whether or not they also want the "DECA network cloud" connected to their internet gateway/router.

Directv would have no larger back door into your network than any other site you sign on to.  Your computer's firewall and virus program still look for folks attempting to access your computer.  The DECA network connection simply passes through your router to the Internet.  I have my BluRay, Wii, a HR21, a HR22, a R22 and three computers all making the identical connection.

Of course, as was posted, if you're concerned don't connect the DECA to your router.  You'll have to decide about connecting the other components as well.
