New dish, no receiver signal

I have a single HR24-200 receiver, formerly connected to a King auto-acquire dish.  Needed to upgrade the dish, as the one channel I need moved from SD to HD recently.  Bought an SWM5 package online. Also bought a used AIM (I'll be moving every week.)  AIM shows happy checkboxes on 99, 101 and 103 both evens and odds, sig str is at -40 dBm.  Receiver is not happy - does not download data.  Spent 2 hours at a local installer this morning, his AIM agrees with mine.  Tried different SL5 LNBs, cable, and receiver, even the reflector (!) - no luck.  Even reconnected the old King auto-acquire just to check, and channels popped right up.  Re-did satellite setup according to installer's instructions.

If I was missing the phantom voltage, the King auto-acquire wouldn't be working.  But what else could we be missing?

You are not aimed correctly. You are not pointing at 101. Those signals are almost certainly from 119 (which you don't use any more).

You’re right and I’m now up and running. A bit peeved that the AIM -said- it was keying on 101 when it was really on 119, but valuable lessons learned.

A big TUVM to all who chimed in!

Are you using a power inserter?

You need a SWM Power Inserter with that setup. The AIM meter is powering the dish when you're checking the signal levels.

@TomWeber also once getting the power inserter be sure to re-run satellite setup on the HR24 so that it properly detects your current satellite dish LNB. You can do this by going to Menu, Settings & Help, Settings, Satellite, and Repeat Satellite Setup. Press the DASH (-) button to confirm and then the setup will do the job.

Here is a link to a 21V power inserter on Amazon:

It seems that there IS a power inserter, as the former King auto-acquire was getting phantom voltage. But, it may well not be the proper 21 Volts that the LNB requires.  So, I did get a 21-volt unit, and I'll put it in line while bypassing the former power inserter.

But now, my AIM is telling me that I am properly pointed and Locked in AZ and EL, with a power level of about -41 dBm.  The tilt adjustment does not seem to be affecting anything, and the EIV is failing.  FWIW, I am in West Virginia this weekend - maybe too far for the 119 satellite that the AIM uses to check tilt?

My AIM setup has an SL5 LNB selected (it's a new 24" x 36" oval dish) and no RB/INTL. I did use it for a couple of hours 2 days ago, so I've just charged it. Any other suggestions on how to get this (Lord, I hope) final hump conquered?

Many thanks to all,

Tom

The 119 has no programing for the US, AFAIK it is being used for Puerto Rico you aim the dish at the 101. The receiver will tell you the az/el and skew/tilt you need when you put the zip code in the sat setup page all the meter does is fine tune the aiming on the 101 then you fine tune the 99/103.

I’m coming to the conclusion that I may have damaged something in the ODU somehow. Or maybe bad out of the box. When I use the AIM to do a Transponder Survey, they all come up as no signal strength, no S/N, no SQ, except for 101/22 thru 101/32, which show -31 sig str, 15-16 S/N, 99-100 SQ, and Locked.

On the other hand, if I do a Sat Tune test with the AIM, then I get -31 sig str on all xponders, all satellites, but only Lock on those same 10 xponders on 101.

So clearly I’m aimed correctly, but there’s still some communication in the system that’s not right.
