download and watch recorded shows only.  No live streaming.  The balance is you will not need a 3G or wifi connection to watch what is downloaded onto your mobile device.

Spot on.  The two devices serve different purposes.  The Nomad is designed to allow you to take your programming wherever you go, self contained.  The sling box provides a remote connection to your TV and associated set top box, but it isn't self contained.

Note that once programming is downloaded to the PC or mobile device, it can be deleted from the DVR and it will have a 30 day shelf life on the PC.  Great when you go on vacation and have a Passport connected to expand program space.  Can leave the DVR empty to record while you're away.

Heres a great comparison:

Slingbox is good

Nomad is not.

I read a quick article about Nomad and started pulling my credit card out....then I came here and put it away.

At least you did your research before buying one.  If Slingbox meets your needs better, that's great.  It doesn't meet mine as I summarized previously.  Nomad is much better for the sort of travel I do and the places I typically visit.

As litzdog says, nomad and slingbox are completely different and each is good for what it is supposed to do. slingbox is great if you want to stream your DirecTv to a remote location. But if you want to take your programming with you, and access it in places where streaming is impossible, you need nomad, because slingbox will be useless to you. .

I want the NOMAD, because in alot of places where I go, I have CLEAR and they aren't great in my area for streaming.  I want to get it because of what has been stated of Solid Signal.

You might also consider a Vulkano!  I have a Flow connected to my H24-500 and love it!

Good luck using your Slingbox without a great internet connection.  For example, my kids could not watch anything while we are on a road trip using their ipod touch devices. However, with a Nomad they could load up their ipod touches from the Nomad before the trip and have plenty of content to watch while on the road.

Slingbox has a purpose and so does Nomad. One or both may be right for you.

I say if you want it all you need both Slingbox and Nomad if you are a DirecTV customer. Unless there is another way to copy recorded shows from a DirecTV DVR to a PC or iphone or itouch that I am unaware of.
