Not detecting a signal... PLZZZZZZZ HELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently moved into my first house. I brought my box with me. Prior to moving it was working fine. The last 2 days we have attempted to put the dish up and connect the box. However the box can not detect a signal what so ever! It is pointed within the right direction. I figure it would pick something up and then we would adjust once we got a signal to hone in on it. We are plugging the line into the LNB, then ran it straight into the back of the box… nothing… I even tested a different box and still nothing. The line was a direct line from dish to box. Does it matter what side of the LNB the wire goes into and what satellite in (1 or 2) the wire goes into the back of the box? Am I missing something? I swear this is how we did it before so I’m stumped. We tried 2 different direct lines as well. AND 2 different dishes and still nothing. One dish tested is on the roof so it is high enough. The other is mounted to the eave of the roof, which is where we had it at our old place, so even that should've been high enough. I know it can pick up a signal through some trees and partial building/house. We even tried the 360 degree turn on both dishes to try and pick up a signal of some sorts, So I just don’t get it…. any thoughts? I’m getting desperate. This digital free TV stuff is just not cutting it!

Any reason you didn't use the movers connection?  That includes a professional installation and some free goodies.  Aligning a dish can be a daunting task and based on your post it appears that you have no idea as to the procedure.  Why not call Directv and have them send an installer out.  They will even furnish a brand new dish.

If you're determined to do this yourself, we need the model of the receiver and the type of dish.  Round, single LNB with two coax connections?

1. No, it doesn't matter what side of the LNB output you connect to. They're identical.

2. Check out the aiming and mapping tools at http://www.dishpointer.com.  I'm pretty sure you're just not getting the aim right.

Due to personal reasons, using the movers connection is not an option at this time. We did this before in the exact same fashion and it worked, so I think I have some idea as to how it works...

Thank you... also this is the hardware I have: DVR - RCA DVR40, Round dish, single LNB 2 coax. However we did try starting on one end and slowly moving the dish to the other side, so I would've thought that we would be able to pick up some kind of signal... but that didn't seem to work either. We also did an up and down motion as well.

Not sure what else to suggest.  It's all about proper alignment.  Check out the aerial mapping tools at http://www.dishpointer.com. They also sell a Smartphone App that lets you see where the satellites are located in the sky using the phone's camera, compass and GPS.

Thank you for the link. We will take a look at it and try again.

The signal does not travel very well through trees, maybe no even enough to register on the receivers signal meter, and it won't travel at all through a building.  That could very well be your problem.

Right.  One leaf or branch between you and the satellites is enough to kill the signal.

If you do as they have suggested and go to dishpointer.com and put in your local address and your dish type and when it shows your house,  go on the graph to the plus sign and close in as close as you can to your house.  You will see where they have placed dish in the picture and you can move it around on your house to possibly a spot where there are no buildings or trees.  If I had the address I would check it for you.

It is really very simple.  Most important when mounting the dish make sure it is perfectly plumb and that has nothing to do with fruit.
