Not Ready For Primetime

What a complete and utter joke this service is.  I've had 4 different techs spent hours at my place trying to get this service hooked up, and all of them tell me the same thing -- DirecTV has given them just a thumbnail sketch of how to do these installs. The result is that they end up winging it, and experimenting with different techniques to try to get the damn thing to work.  One month and many hours of work later, and my system doesn't work as well as it did when I was running the beta over my home network.  I wish I'd never decided to "upgrade" to a professional install.

I've got 5 HD DVRs and 1 regular HD receiver.  None of them can see all of the other receivers, a few of them can see programs on one or two other receivers, but none of them can actually play anything on another receiver.  Of course, which receivers can see other receivers and the identity of the receivers they're able to see is constantly in flux.  It is madness.

One of the techs actually said, and I quote, "DirecTV is kinda using you early adopters as guinea pigs to see how this works."  Guess what, DIrecTV, you wasting hours of my time while your techs spin their wheels, with no training on how to properly install these systems, is not acceptable.  Figure it out on your own time, or pay me a consulting fee for helping to train your techs.

toasty,

I think you can get help here, but it would be nice if you explain your setup i.e. type of receviers, DECA's, power supply and inserters, whether a not a SWiM was installed, was anything add to your dish and was a DECA with a 18 volt power supply attached to your router or internet source so you can access On Demand, Media Share and Directc2PC.

I've got 3 HR24-500s, 2 HR22-100s, and 1 H21-100.  All three of the HR24s are connected to the internet via direct ethernet connection.  I have no idea what the answers to the other questions would be, I kinda left that to the installers to do whatever needed to be done.

I appreciate the offer of help, but I'm basically done messing around with this myself, and I'm not even sure I'm prepared to let them send anyone else out to work on it.  Totally more hassle than it's worth.

These websites show what the DECA looks like and along with the other equipment that's needed to complete the setup your WH DVR system, plus how it's connected to your receivers.

You are not alone, but it does take patience to understand how the system works. Plus if you decide to have them return (which I would since you are paying for this system) you will have knowledge as to what equipment is needed. I am a user just like you.

That's not right.  There should be no ethernet cable connected to your HR24s if DirecTV properly set you up with DECA-based Whole Home DVR.  There should be a separate DECA module that "bridges" the DECA network to your home network/internet.  Unfortunately too many installers still aren't doing this correctly.

That link has a basic flaw in the SWM 16 schemnatic in that there is no power supply for the BB DECA.  You'd be well advised to discard that one.

I hope so, too, thanks for your replies.  I'm waiting for a call from DirecTV right now -- was supposed to call me between 8 and 8:30 CDT, and we're nearly an hour past that now, so who knows when I'll hear from them, but I'll definitely pass this info along if and when I do.

You are welcome, once it's connected correctly; I think you will be happy with the results.
