"Only New Episodes" records multiple episodes

I have a Genie-II and have set my "Typical Recording Preferences" to 'Episode Type' = 'Only New Episodes'.  I would expect that this records ONLY the first version of an episode of a program, no matter what channel it's on and as long as it's on a channel I get.  However, each day I see multiple versions of the same exact program in my List.  This isn't a huge issue as I have plenty of room on the List, but after watching the episode I have to backtrack and delete all the episodes that have recorded.  Again, not difficult and not a huge problem.

Am I doing something wrong or do I need to just deal with it how it is?

We’d be glad to help with those duplicate recordings, @jmrchico.

It sounds like you have the right settings for what you're after. We do have a quick question: does this happen for all programs? If it’s only one or a few programs, you may have them saved multiple times in your Series Manager. Go to List > Left arrow > Manage Recordings > Series Manager, and see if you have duplicate series saved in there. Deleting them should stop the multiple recordings.

You can also set to see if the program is set to record on all channels, and switch that to one channel. That may help get rid of these duplicates.

Let us know if you have other questions, @jmrchico, we’re here to help!

Thank you for the quick response.  I looked in Series Manager and there is only 1 listing for the show in particular that I've been seeing this happen to.  I have the new Genie 2 HS17R1/500 (had it since last week), so all the series I set up are new as well.  I don't see a way to limit where the recording comes from (you mentioned All Channels vs One Channel).

The one program that I'm seeing this happen to all the time is an ESPN daily show called Highly Questionable.  It normally starts at 11:30am PST and is a 1/2 hour, but re-airs throughout the day on their different channels....so I get all those recordings as well.

Anyway, not a big deal at all...was just curious if I was doing something incorrectly.

Thanks!

Jeff

Setting up a series from the search menu records all channels and On Demand and all episodes this is for binge watchers regardless of the first run only being set up, plus some channels don't send first run info to the guide maker mainly on older programs.  Setting up a series from the guide only records that channel and time.

Our pleasure, @jmrchico! And thanks for providing more info! Let’s try this:

Return to Series Manager, and delete Highly Questionable. After that, pull up Smart Search, using the Dash button on your remote (just below the #7 button). Search again for Highly Questionable, go to “All Seasons,” hit record, and then go to Info > change All to New. Save that recording.

Let’s see if that fixes the duplicate program problem. Let us know how it goes, @jmrchico!

Don't setup a recording of any kind using search, because that will record on demand and any channel the program is found on, instead setup the recording directly from the guide.

What Nabuki said - go to the program in the guide on the channel you want to record and set the program to record from there - if you do it from using the search function you will get multiple recordings (sometimes)
