Playback failed no audio/video data packets received from receiver
I recently had HR24 HD DVR and one HR24 HD Receiver installed by the tech DirecTV chose for me when I signed up online. The tests he ran with playing recorded programs on the HD receiver in the other room worked fine, but soon after he left, some of the programs wouldn't play, but gave me the error in the subject. I figured it must have been because the programs that wouldn't play were corrupted or something because some worked fine. However the problem has gotten progressively worse and now most of the recorded programs won't play back in the other room. None of the SD programs will play and only a few HD programs will play.
I have reset both the DVR and the other receiver with no change. Any suggestions?

I am assuming he did not connect your receivers to the router/Internet. If he did, we need to know the details of the connection.
As to the connection problem. Disconnect AC power from the receiver, then the DVR, then the SWM power inserter (see pic). Leave everything else connected. Plug in the power inserter. Plug in the DVR and allow it to boot up. Plug in the receiver. This will reconfigure your entire system and should restore connection.

Yes the DVR is connected to the internet via a coax cable that connects to a little white box that says DECA on it that is connected to my home network router via a network cable.
I will try restarting everything in the sequence you suggested. Let me know if there is anything else I can do.

To be honest, I am not real impressed with the internet on demand stuff. If you think the internet might be causing the problem, I would be fine with disconnecting it altogether.

I turned off the DECA and rebooted everything in the sequence you suggested. I can now play all of the recorded programs in the list.

I should say, I unplugged the DECA. I appreciate your help!

Well, the idea of the power off reset is to leave the router DECA connected so each receiver will configure to it. The instructions were to "leave everything else connected". The network connection gives you Directv2PC, Mediashare, TV Apps as well as On Demand which has a huge assortment of 1080p movies as well as links to almost every channel's website.
I doubt you had the time to familiarize yourself with all the features, but if you're happy with no network connection, that's fine with me.

I appear to be having a very similar problem. I have two HD-DVRs and one HD receiver. The HD-DVR upstairs willl *sometimes* play SD shows from the downstairs HD-DVR, but the HD shows *always* seem to play.
On the HD-DVR downstairs, SD shows recorded upstairs *always* play.

Did you try the power off reset as described above?

Not yet. Instead, I sent my wife downstairs to start playback of an SD show on the other DVR, a trick from another thread. Once that was done, the upstairs DVR would play SD shows from the downstairs DVR. At least, it would do so for a while, as this is the *second* time the system has had this problem. Given the intermittent nature of the difficulty, I'm far from convinced that unplugging and replugging everything will actually provide a permanent fix. Also, the procedure that you gave was for a single DVR and receiver. I have two DVRs and one receiver. I *frequently* play SD shows recorded on the upstairs DVR *on* the upstairs DVR and I note that the downstairs DVR and receiver *never* have a problem playing the SD shows recorded *upstairs*. Given that piece of data, it seems highly unlikely that this is a networking problem since *all* of the HD content plays correctly on all of the machines. -- Bill Roper, roper@filker.com

Unfortunately, a few hours after I rebooted everything the recordings stopped playing again with the same error so I am back to square one. I ran a diagnostic test on the DVR and it said everything was fine. I ran a diagnostic on the non DVR receiver and it said it detected a problem and if I was having problems watching recorded programs I should contact DirecTV with the following error code: 72-79-003
What does that mean?

I'm told that the 72 means that you don't have a phone line connected. (I know that, because I don't either.)
The rest of the error code remains a mystery to the folks on the tech support line, at least as of the time when I called and they said they'd never heard of anything like this.
The workaround appears to be to periodically play an SD show on the DVR that it's recorded on. (At least in my case.)

This really stinks. Whole-Home was, by far, my primary reason for switching from Dish Network to DirecTV. With Dish you can use one DVR receiver to provide signal to 2 TVs. The only down side is that the 2nd TV signal is strictly 480p. When I heard about DirecTV offering HD in all rooms I jumped at it, but apparently I jumped prematurely.

Thanks dodekabill. I will try the lame workaround for now. I actually had problems with some HD programs too, but primarly SD. I hope somebody figures this out eventually.

I had direct tv installed 2 wks ago . I have a dvr receiver, and 2 hd's and 2 reg boxes.
I have the mvr service too and have the same message that the above person is having. I do not have the internet connected with them. I have cable for my internet service. I have been in contact with them a tech comes and it works for while he is here after doing all the above mentioned and then later we go to use it and it wont work again. No one can seem to figure anything out why it is not working so tomm another service guy is coming and suppose to bring a new dvr box so we shall see. why it works for some and not others is ridiculous. Not a happy new customer I know that
