Problem with recorded programs on HR34-700

Recorded programs have started to end prematurely, asking if I want to delete or save.  If I save and fast forward to the point of the problem it will continue, many times it will happen 2 or 3 times during a 1 hour recording.  It does not happen on all shows but it does appear to be getting worse.  Is there a way to force a scan of the hard drive for errors, or a way to fix them?

Yes, you can scan the drive by rebooting the HR34 with the red reset button and pressing any button on the remote when it is running receiver self-check. It should then say ‘Running Diagnostics Mode.’ In diagnostic mode, you can run a surface test of the hard drive (may take a long time) and try to fix errors.

Besides, the HR34 was the first ever generation Genie and it is outdated and slow by today’s standards. I recommend you call DIRECTV (number in my greeting below) and ask to get a replacement receiver for your HR34. Most likely, you will receive an HS17 receiver so be aware that any current standalone HD-DVR or HD receivers like the HR24 or H25 will become genie clients. If you would not like this, ask the agent to replace your HR34 for an HR54.

You're lucky the HR34 is still functional. That 1st generation Genie is known for being slow and having overheating issues.

A warranty replacement should result in an HR44 or HR54. Faster processor and a redesign with better cooling. It is on the new software interface. Has the wireless CCK built-in, so if you use an external make sure to disconnect it if you get either of these as a replacement. Be caught up on recordings first as they do not transfer.

Be cautious if offered a Genie-2 (HS17). That is a different line of equipment, which means upgrade with 24-month service agreement. It is a Headless Server tower, meaning it doesn't go on a TV itself. It only allows Clients, so any existing full receiver you have would be replaced as well-meaning you lose those tuners, independent processing, and their recordings. If all you have are Mini Genie Clients, then it technically would be an upgrade with more tuners and recording space. Personally, I'll keep the freedom of full receivers.
