Problems with installation on RV prior to trip

OK, I am having problems setting up the rv satellite system for a trip. I have done it before without problems, but am trying to simplify and use a small dish this time. I cannot get the hd receiver to recognize a signal. This is what I have done so far:

1. Set up small dish with signal meter. It is round (actually slightly oblong in the vertical plane) with a single small round head that contains two outputs (two lnbs?) for two cables. I am only using one.
2. Set dish for proper azimuth and elevation for location. Get a strong signal on meter. Actually find several satellites, as usual, with the meter.
3. Inside have Directv hd receiver without signal converter (b band converter). Have it set up for 'multiswitch'. Setup screen says do not use converter for small dish. I have set up both with and without the converter with no difference in result. Am wondering if this is the problem and the hd receiver cannot work with a small dish. I really do not care if I do not get hd and planned to watch sd during the trip.
4. The receiver is receiving something from the dish since it powers the meter properly, but the setup screen says 'no signal detected'. If I change the setup to 'no switch' the meter does not work. In the setup screen it shows only sat 101 and will not allow me to change to any other sat. Was actually hoping to be able to move from one sat to another by moving dish, but apparently do not have the option. Wonder why?
5. I do have the ability to connect both lnb connections from the dish to the rv, but the hd receiver (no dvr) only has one input, so it would not change anything. Have switched between them with no change in results.
6. Do not have an hd dish to take with me, and really do not want to dismount the Slimline 3 that is on top of the house.

Am I just SOL?
