Questions About HR24
WOW...after all of the bashing of D* CSR's I have done since 5/13, they turn ariund and send me a "brand new" HR24-500 for the replacement HD DVR I ordered for my dying Hughes TIVO HDVR2. I cannot recall reading many "specifics" for these new DVR's on the forums, so for my intents and purposes I have a couple of questions I need answered:
1)Does the HR24 require BBC modules? They didn't ship me any and I have one spare, but would need two(one for each tuner).
2)It has only one Ethernet port and I understand this has "DECA" built into it. Will connecting the HR24's Ethernet port "hard-wired" with cat5e to my Gateway modem(built-in router), just like my HR20 and H21's are connected to my home network, work for Whole Home DVR Service just like my HR20 DVR?????
Like I said, D*'s Customer Service has really laid the guilt trip on me sending me this HR24(BTW, it is a BEAUTIFUL box....much nicer looking than the previous silver/black HR2x models).

The HR24 does need BBC modules. Best to call and ask your friendly CSR for some, since there are many reports that ordering them online doesn't work.
Plugging your Ethernet cable into the HR24 should work just like it does with your HR20. When the Ethernet is plugged in the internal DECA is disabled.

He guys, I called DirecTV this morning and they told me that none of the models HR23(or higher) required the BBC modules???? Did I get a CSR that really didn't have the correct info??? He wouldn't send me any:0(
Also, my son did some "googling" on the HR24 and the information he found stated that this model has "three tuners" and implied that you can record two channels simultaneously and watch a third live. It's only got two "Satellite In" connections and I definitely don't have SWiM. What's the skinny on the 3 tuners(I told him it may be that if you had one HR24 HD DVR and two H24 HD receivers, the built-in DECA on all of them would most likely "automatically/immediately" network the boxes over the coax run and maybe the third tuner would be strictly used for "network traffic").
Anyhoo, I had a scavenger hunt early this morning and discovered I did have a second "spare" BBC out in my RV, so I'm gonna try the install with/without and if I need them I may call back and have them send me one more(I feel comfortable having a "spare BBC handy"......just in case one goes bad.
P.S.
My son also found a "performance graphic" that shows the HR24's "processor speed" compared to other "video/communication" devices. it's purportedly pretty fast compared to most electronics. I'll try to attach that to my post, but am unsure of the "file type" and whether the forums will accept the attachment.
P.S.
Attachment seemed to work fine.

BBC's absolutely required on the 24 series, thou must not doubt Sungam. See page 5 of the link.

Note that they likely did not include a wide band tuner because the 24 series was specifically designed to be used with SWM and DECA.

Like all the other HR2x DVRs, the HR24 has two tuners and follows the same rules... record two at once while watching one of those two or something previously recorded. Some early DirecTV HD DVR information, including I think the manuals, implied that you could watch a third live program, but that has never been true. Perhaps this is just a continuation of that mis-information. Surely, three tuners would have been big news if it were true...

Thanks guys...I'm lucky I had two BBC's sitting around. What did you think of that "performance graph" in regard to "accuracy"????? I noticed they didn't list the HR21(that users on these forums continually complain about being slow) and even though there were 7 "devices" rated above the HR24(including a Dish model:0( the fact that it is rated above my HR20(which has never really exhibited slow performance behavior...even with a 1.5TB eSATA 90% full). Even though I think the HR24 has a 500GB internal(which would give me a combined 2TB) I'm still planning on putting a 1.5TB eSATA on it(with WHDS...welcome to djdicetn's "HD movie jukebox":0)
Now......if I can just get my wife to agree we are "wasting" a HD DVR having it connected to an old Philips 19" 4:3 SDTV in our bedroom using a $30 expense called a RF Modulator and get her to approve the expenditure for a nice 32" HDTV to replace it:0)

dcd,
Thanks, you well know that I've historically been an avid "Toshiba kinda guy", but was real impressed with the PQ my son has on a Vizio he bought(as well as what he paid for it), but we all know that Sony continues to be one of the leaders in quality HDTV's(my father-in-law bought a 55" XBR9 that'll knock your socks off). And the Sony you pointed out IS in the price range I'm trying to sell to the wife(although I found a 1080p 37" Vizio for just about $20 more than that). And, like I said, if I could just convince my "Financial Advisor" what a waste of $30 the RF Modulator is(she's still not convinced I got a good deal on the HR24....tax, title & delivery "considerably" less than $100)LOL!!!!!!!!!
My son is sooooooooooooo jealous:0)
