Rc64 remote turns on onkyo upon pressing most buttons

I cannot figure out why my Onkyo receiver is powering on when I press most of the buttons on my rc64 DirecTV remote. I do have it hooked up through HDMI with pass through technology. This problem started about 3 weeks ago and nothing has changed on either end so I don't know why it just started happening. I even found an old remote and put some batteries in it and it's doing the same thing to the Onkyo receiver, it Powers up as soon as I press any of the buttons like exit or info or select or pause. Does anyone know why the started happening?
