Receiver records more than necessary

When we set the recorder to record a program, it frequently records a whole day of that channel. It will record 13 hours of miscellaneous programs that I have to search through to find what I was interested in. This often blocks other shows during the process too.  Now it has the 771 message across the bottom and is searching for signal!
