Recording replays on 'First showing' only
I've been having annoying problems recording multiple series. My DVR will record shows it's not supposed to. I always set my series recording to record "first showing only" yet it will record the current series no matter what episode is on TV. For example, if a show is 5 episodes in, it will record every time that series replays episodes 1-5. This is very annoying as I will have multiple shows i don't want to watch, it's taking up too much space on the DVR, and it also limits what we can watch and/or record as it's using an 1 of the 2 HD channels we can watch/record at unknown times throughout the day. Is this a common problem, or is there a way to fix this?

It is not a common problem, but on occasion a program's producer will not provide the proper guide info and the result will be a bit messy.
On the other hand, you need to understand how the system works. For example, if the 101 channel adds a series that was originally on a premium channel some time ago. If you set that series to record first run, all of those old episodes will record for obvious reasons.
If you'll post back the specific program, channel and time slot you're having difficulty with maybe I or someone can provide additional info.
A tip. Set programs that have multiple showings during the week low in your priority list. Set programs that have single showings high in the list.

These are all new programs, they are the original "first showings". As for the shows, I know 2 off the top of my head: Teen Mom and Jersey Shore. Also we've never had this problem with AT&T Uverse (which we just switched from) while recording these same shows at the same times. The original time slots for Teen Mom is Tuesdays at 7pm (PST), and Jersey Shore is Thur at 7pm (PST). However as of now Monday is inundated with about a dozen Teen Mom and Jersey Shore recordings. Along with a few others scattered about the week. Thanks for your help!
This wouldn't be as big of a problem is we had 3 or 4 HD channels at our disposal. But being as it is, if we're recording 2 shows, we can't watch live TV. Making this problem and even bigger pain.

recording 2 shows, we can't watch live TV.
You must be new to DVR's. Most of us who have had them for a while NEVER watch live TV. I haven't seen a commercial since the TV was on in the Dentist's office.
We don't record Teen Moms, but the Jersey Shore situation is as I described in my first post, paragraph 1. Many of the episodes are properly coded with the "first aired" date, but then a group will come along and the DVR will schedule several of the same episode to repeatedly record.
The producers furnish the info to the contractor, the contractor produces the guide, and Directv loads it into your DVR. A very difficult situation to correct. Once a week or so you can go through the to do list and weed out the bad ones if you like.
I'd wager that most of your programs record properly, yes?

Yes, all the proper episodes record, it just records a ton of extra's. And its a bit strange, as I said before, the DVR we had with Uverse never had this problem, and now that we switch do Directv we do. And no, I'm not new to DVR's 😛 My wife watches her shows which we record. I on the other hand only watch Sportscenter and sports events (NFL games, World Cup, Baseball games, etc etc) . Those I always like to watch live. And it's quite annoying to try to turn on the football game or Sportscenter to get my daily dose of sports news, and be told you can't watch this game because your DVR is recording a re-run of a show we don't want to record haha.

On my DVR Jersey Girls is set to record the proper episodes EXCEPT there is a Labor Day Marathon and those were all scheduled as well, so we manually deleted them.
